Job Description

Adjunct Faculty, Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities About the DepartmentThe Lifelong Learning department delivers high-quality, accessible educational programs that empower adults to pursue personal growth, maintain cognitive, physical, and emotional well-being, and engage in meaningful community connection. Through in-person and virtual offerings, we foster a culture of lifelong learning that strengthens individual vitality and contributes to the overall health and resilience of our community.

General ResponsibilitiesThe Lifelong Learning department is seeking passionate and dedicated instructors to lead engaging, hands-on courses for adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by helping students build confidence, independence, and practical life skills in areas such as social skills, daily living, vocational skills, financial literacy, personal safety, and more. The instructor will create a welcoming and supportive learning environment that encourages participation, celebrates achievements, and fosters a sense of community.

The instructor will adapt teaching strategies and materials to meet the diverse abilities, learning styles, and needs of adult learners. They will monitor student progress, provide individualized support and feedback, and implement accommodations to ensure every student can succeed. In addition, the instructor will collaborate with Lifelong Learning staff on curriculum planning, course development, and professional growth opportunities, contributing to a dynamic and inclusive educational program.

Minimum QualificationsEducation and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Human Services, Adult Education, Psychology, Social Work, or related discipline.
  • At least 1-2 years of experience teaching, supporting, or working directly with adults with developmental or intellectual disabilities.
  • Relevant certifications or training in working with individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities are highly desirable.
  • Experience designing and delivering instructional activities, life skills training, or vocational training in an inclusive and accessible learning environment.
  • Experience creating inclusive and accessible learning environments, including adapting instruction to meet diverse learner needs.
  • Experience in curriculum development for adults with disabilities.
Teaching Load
  • Courses typically meet once per week for 90 minutes.
  • Faculty may be asked to teach one or more courses based on their expertise and availability.
Criteria
CRITERIA
The following criteria, which are not the sole criteria used in the final hiring decision, will be used to review the applications of those persons who meet the stated minimum qualifications and to select those qualified applicants who will be interviewed. Essential Duties
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging, hands-on instruction in areas such as life skills, social skills, vocational skills, financial literacy, and personal safety.
  • Develop lesson plans, instructional activities, supplemental materials, and course syllabi in alignment with departmental guidelines and learning objectives.
  • Create and maintain a welcoming, supportive, inclusive, and accessible learning environment that promotes participation, confidence, independence, and social interaction among diverse adult learners.
  • Adapt teaching methods and materials to meet the needs of learners with diverse abilities, learning styles, and developmental levels.
  • Monitor, document, and assess student progress; provide individualized feedback, support, and accommodations as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, participation, and performance, and submit required documentation according to departmental deadlines.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, encouraging respect, collaboration, and community-building.
  • Collaborate with Lifelong Learning staff on curriculum development, course planning, instructional improvements, and departmental evaluation activities.
  • Participate in professional development, mandatory institutional trainings, and other activities to stay current in best practices for teaching adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
  • Respond to student emails and phone calls within 48 hours (excluding weekends and holidays); maintain regular communication using the assigned PGCC email account.
  • Attend all required departmental and institutional meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesKnowledge
  • Understanding of adult learning principles and instructional strategies for learners with developmental or intellectual disabilities.
  • Knowledge of life skills, social skills, vocational skills, financial literacy, and personal safety concepts.
  • Familiarity with curriculum development and lesson planning for diverse learners.
  • Awareness of accessibility practices, accommodations, and inclusive teaching strategies.
  • Knowledge of assessment methods to evaluate progress and learning outcomes.
  • Knowledge of best practices in behavior guidance, social skills training, and independent living skills.
  • Familiarity with community resources and support for adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
Skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to design and deliver engaging, hands-on learning activities.
  • Classroom management and behavior guidance skills in a supportive, positive manner.
  • Proficiency in adapting materials and instruction to meet individual learner needs.
  • Collaboration and teamwork skills to work effectively with staff, caregivers, and community partners.
Abilities
  • Ability to create a safe, engaging, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire adult learners with diverse abilities.
  • Ability to monitor, assess, and provide constructive feedback on student progress.
  • Ability to respond flexibly and adapt instruction to meet changing needs or challenges.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and manage administrative responsibilities.
Job Requirements
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have the use of sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. No significant climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English.
