Job Description
Description of Work The Instructional Media Specialist is responsible for the ownership, operation, and continuous improvement of the university's academic video production and instructional media ecosystem , ensuring that video functions as a reliable, accessible, and pedagogically sound core teaching medium across Webster University's online and continuing education digital learning initiatives. This role combines academic media platform stewardship , high-quality instructional media production , faculty development and support , and accessibility accountability . The position is embedded in the course and continuing education development and revision lifecycle and serves as a required dependency for credit-bearing instruction, faculty training and support, and institutional digital learning initiatives . The Instructional Media Specialist plans, directs, shoots, edits, and produces professional instructional media, including documentary-style field productions, instructional demonstrations, interview recordings, faculty-led instructional video with integrated teaching graphics, and motion-graphics - based instructional media . The role serves as the primary steward of the university's academic video platform (Kaltura) , overseeing media organization, delivery, integration with Canvas, and distribution within course and continuing education learning environments. The position ensures all instructional video meets accessibility standards and supports faculty in the effective design, creation, and delivery of instructional media. The role requires a blend of creative production expertise and technical leadership , inc luding motion graphics, audio production, instructional video design, platform management, faculty consultation, and accessibility best practices. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Serve as the primary owner and steward of the university's academic video platform (Kaltura) , in cluding configuration, organization, permissions, integration with Canvas, and media distribution within course environments. Ensure the reliable, accessible, and pedagogically appropriate use of instructional video across online and continuing education courses, faculty training, and institutional digital learning initiatives. Plan, direct, shoot, edit, and publish high-quality instructional media in sup port of online and continuing education instruction and academic programs, including documentary-style field productions, instructional demonstrations, interviews, faculty-led instructional videos, and motion-graphics-based instructional media. Collaborate with faculty, instructional designers, and academic units to design, produce, and integrate instructional media aligned with course outcomes, teaching strategies, and accessibility standards. Provid e faculty development and consultation rel ated to instructional video design, production practices, and effective use of media within Canvas courses. Ensure instructional media accessibility compliance, including oversight of captions, transcripts, audio descriptions, and remediation workflows for instructional video content, in alignment with academic accessibility standards and regulatory requirements . Produce and mix high-quality audio for instructional media, including voiceovers and live recordings, ensuring clarity and instructional effectiveness. Create instructional motion graphics and visual teaching assets, independently or in collaboration with designers. Monitor platform updates, emerging tools, and instructional media practices, and make institutional recommendations to improve academic media workflows, standards, and system use. Troubleshoot instructional video playback, embedding, and integration issues within learning management systems and academic platforms. Participate in onlin e and continuing education course development, redesign, content development , and cross-functional design sprints as a required media production and platform dependency . Contribute to the continuous improvement of instructional media standards, workflows, and visual communication practices in support of online learning. Perform other duties as assigned in support of academic instruction, faculty development, and digital learning initiatives . This is a part-time position located at our Webster Groves, Missouri campus. Qualifications For Appointment Ability to own and operate an academic instructional media ecosystem , including video production workflows, platform use, and media delivery within learning environments. Demonstrated proficiency in instructional video production , including camera operation, lighting, audio capture, editing, and post-production. Strong skills in instructional motion graphics and visual explanation , including the use of animated text, graphics, and teaching visuals to support learning outcomes. Working knowledge of video accessibility principles , including captions, transcripts, and audio descriptions, and the ability to apply accessibility best practices to instructional media. Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects , balancing long-term course development timelines with time-sensitive instructional and training needs. Strong interpersonal and communication skills , including the ability to collaborate with faculty, instructional designers, and non-technical stakeholders in both in-person and virtual environments. Self-directed with strong problem-solving skills , sound judgment, and a high degree of personal accountability. Collaborative mindset with the ability to contribute effectively to cross-functional academic and digital learning teams . Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and adapting to evolving instructional media tools, platforms, and technologies. Requisite Experience Bachelor's degree in film production, video production, media arts, or related field, or equivalent professional experienc e . Minimum of two years of professional instructional or media production experience . Experience planning, directing, and shooting field-based and studio-based video productions using DSLR or comparable camera systems. Experience with location and studio audio recording , including boom and lavalier microphone techniques. Professional experience using Adobe Creative Suite , including Premiere Pro and After Effects; experience with Illustrator and Photoshop for instructional media assets. Experience producing motion graphics and post-production visual elements , including green screen workflows. Experience preparing, transcoding, publishing, and archiving video for web-based and platform-based delivery . Familiarity with basic web publishing concepts , including HTML and CSS, as they relate to media embedding and delivery. Experience working with a range of standard software tools, including productivity applications, browsers, and media platforms.
