Job Description
The Digital Accessibility Coordinator is a full-time, 12-month position located on the Old Charlotte Highway Campus in Monroe, NC. Under the direction of the Director of the Center for Learning and Teaching, the Digital Accessibility Coordinator coordinates institutional efforts to ensure that South Piedmont's digital content, instructional materials, communications, and educational technologies are digitally accessible, inclusive, and aligned with
WCAG 2.1
AA, ADA, and Section 508 standards. This role provides direct consultation, facilitates training and professional development, and delivers actionable recommendations to faculty and staff to support best practices and ongoing adherence to digital accessibility requirements. The Coordinator conducts accessibility audits, guides the remediation of digital materials—including course components, PDFs, HTML content, and multimedia—and leads solution-focused discussions to address instructional challenges while improving the usability, accessibility, and overall quality of digital learning environments. In addition to accessibility compliance, this role supports instructional design efforts across the institution, including course design and redesign, faculty consultation on pedagogy and learning technologies, and the development of professional learning resources. The Digital Accessibility Coordinator also oversees accessibility within the Canvas learning management system, including at the institutional, sub-account, and individual course levels. Working directly with instructors, the Coordinator identifies and implements necessary corrections to elevate accessibility standards and ensure full compliance. Essential Duties Summary Digital Accessibility Initiatives Ability to translate digital accessibility requirements into practical strategies. Maintain current knowledge of Americans with Disabilities Act Title II requirements andWCAG 2.1
Level AA digital accessibility standards. Coordinate institutional initiatives to ensure compliance with accessibility standards such as WCAG 2.1, Section 508, and Americans with Disabilities Act. Prioritize high-risk or high-impact digital accessibility issues and design and implement remediation strategies. Conduct accessibility audits of digital learning content, websites, documents, and educational technologies. Provide remediation guidance for instructional materials including PDFs, multimedia, presentations, and LMS content. Develop institutional guidelines and resources for accessible digital course design. Collaborate with IT, disability services, and compliance offices to address accessibility issues across instructional technologies. Apply project management and organizational skills to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously, meeting deadlines and maintaining clear documentation and communication. Monitor regulatory updates and recommend institutional improvements related to accessibility. Instructional Design Support Support Instructional Designers and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) on the design and development of accessible, learner-centered course content across modalities. Assist in course redesign projects that integrate accessibility, engagement, and quality standards. Provide guidance on effective use of learning technologies to support instructional design and digital accessibility goals. Collaborate with faculty to align course content with institutional quality standards, evidence-based instructional practices, and student-centered design principles. Technology Tools Curation Evaluate digital learning tools and platforms for accessibility and instructional effectiveness. Provide guidance on accessible use of multimedia, captioning, document creation, and LMS tools. Support the adoption of technologies that enhance accessible and effective learning environments. Training & Professional Development Design and facilitate workshops, webinars, and training programs on digital accessibility and course design. Develop self-paced learning modules and faculty resources related to accessibility and instructional design. Provide individualized coaching and consultations to faculty and staff. Promote institutional awareness of accessible teaching practices and inclusive course design. Required Qualifications Master's degree in Educational Technology, Instructional Design, Curriculum and Instruction, or a closely related field. 2-3 years of proven experience applying accessibility standards such asWCAG 2.1.
Practical experience with screen-readers, text-to-speech tools, PDF remediation. Experience conducting accessibility audits using accessibility evaluation tools. Experience with content remediation in digital environments to include Microsoft files, emails, digital flyers and promotional materials, online courses. Experience with video capture and multimedia platforms (e.g., Panopto, Kaltura, Zoom, or similar technologies), with demonstrated knowledge of digital accessibility practices such as captioning, transcript creation, and accessible media design Minimum 2-3 years of professional experience in instructional design, digital accessibility, or educational technology in higher education or a comparable learning environment. Experience designing courses within a Learning Management System, Canvas preferred. Strong knowledge of instructional design models (e.g., ADDIE Model or Backward Design). Experience providing faculty and staff consultation, training, or professional development sessions. Ability to design, deliver, and evaluate engaging professional development. Strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to collaborate across academic and administrative units. Preferred Qualifications Certification or specialized training in digital accessibility, such as the Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC), Accessible Document Specialist (ADS), Web Accessibility Specialist (WAS), or comparable credentials. Experience applying course quality frameworks such as Quality Matters to evaluate and improve online courses, demonstrating ability to align quality rubrics with accessibility and usability standards. Knowledge of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and its application in digital learning environments. Knowledge of inclusive pedagogy/andragogy and student-centered learning.
