Administrative Calendar Job Summary The Instructional Designer is responsible for designing, developing, producing, and continuously improving engaging, accessible, and effective learning experiences that advance A Step Up Academy's professional learning initiatives for both internal and external constituencies. Working within the Professional Learning & Knowledge Department, this position partners with Subject-Matter Experts (SMEs) to transform organizational expertise and specialized knowledge into high-quality educational content for a variety of learners and delivery formats. The Instructional Designer manages learning projects from concept through production and implementation, creating written, visual, audio, video, interactive, and other digital learning materials. Certifications and Qualifications Bachelor's degree in instructional design, education, educational technology, communications, multimedia design, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant education and professional experience may be considered. Demonstrated experience designing and developing instructional, training, or professional learning content from concept through completion. Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud (After Effects, Premiere Pro, Audition, Photoshop, and Illustrator are the main tools used) and experience producing multimedia content, including video, audio, graphics, presentations, and digital learning materials. Strong written, visual, organizational, and project management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with Subject-Matter Experts and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Knowledge of adult learning theory, instructional design methodologies, assessment design, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and digital accessibility/WCAG principles preferred. Experience with eLearning authoring tools, learning management systems, and project-management platforms preferred; familiarity with Brightspace and Airtable is a plus. Experience in autistic support, special education, intellectual and/or developmental disability services, or a related field is preferred. Current (dated within a year) Act 34, 114, and 151 clearances Ability to work independently in person or virtually as needed Essential Duties Instructional Design & Course Development Design and develop engaging, effective, and accessible learning experiences for employees and external audiences. Lead instructional design projects from initial concept and planning through development, production, implementation, evaluation, and revision. Partner with Subject-Matter Experts (SMEs) to translate specialized knowledge, organizational practices, processes, and technical information into clear and effective learning experiences. Facilitate conversations with SMEs to identify essential content, learner needs, performance expectations, prerequisite knowledge, and desired outcomes. Develop measurable learning objectives and outcomes aligned with the purpose and intended audience of each learning experience. Determine appropriate instructional approaches, sequencing, activities, assessments, and delivery formats based on learning objectives and audience needs. Organize complex or highly specialized information into logical, understandable, and learner-centered educational content. Develop course briefs, outlines, scripts, storyboards, facilitator materials, participant materials, job aids, reference materials, assessments, and other instructional resources as appropriate. Design learning experiences that support knowledge acquisition as well as the practical application, generalization, and retention of learning. Apply consistent instructional design standards across ASUA's growing portfolio of professional learning content. Adapt content appropriately for different audiences, levels of experience, delivery methods, and learning environments. Multimedia & Digital Content Production Produce multimedia learning materials from concept through final deliverable, including video, audio, graphics, presentations, digital resources, interactive materials, and other instructional media. Record, edit, and produce instructional video and audio content in collaboration with SMEs and other contributors. Create graphics, visual aids, diagrams, infographics, animations, and other visual learning assets that support comprehension and engagement. Develop polished presentations and other visual instructional materials consistent with ASUA's established visual and linguistic identity. Use Adobe Creative Cloud applications and other appropriate production tools to create and edit professional-quality instructional content. Develop interactive digital learning experiences and activities using appropriate instructional technologies and authoring tools. Prepare multimedia and instructional assets for use across multiple delivery environments, including instructor-led, virtual, asynchronous, blended, and learning-management-system-based experiences. Maintain organized source files, production assets, project materials, and final deliverables to support future revision and reuse. Ensure instructional media meets established standards for quality, consistency, accessibility, and usability. Subject-Matter Expert Collaboration Serve as the instructional design partner for SMEs throughout the course-development process. Guide SMEs in identifying what learners need to know or do rather than simply transferring existing information into a training format. Conduct interviews, working sessions, and content reviews to gather and clarify subject matter. Help SMEs distinguish essential instructional content from supplemental or reference information. Translate SME knowledge into learner-centered language, activities, examples, assessments, and instructional experiences. Establish clear expectations, timelines, responsibilities, and review processes with SMEs and other project contributors. Incorporate SME feedback while maintaining instructional integrity, consistency, accessibility, and alignment with established learning objectives. Coordinate appropriate review and approval of instructional materials prior to implementation or publication. Project Management Manage assigned learning-development projects through ASUA's established course-development workflow. Maintain course-development projects, tasks, timelines, milestones, dependencies, and deliverables within Airtable and other designated project-management systems. Develop realistic production schedules in collaboration with the Head of Professional Learning & Knowledge, SMEs, and other project contributors. Coordinate the timely completion of content development, review, multimedia production, revisions, approvals, and implementation. Proactively identify project risks, delays, resource needs, or barriers and communicate them to the appropriate stakeholders. Manage multiple instructional design projects simultaneously while maintaining quality, accuracy, and established deadlines. Maintain clear documentation of project status, decisions, revisions, and final deliverables. Learning Evaluation & Continuous Improvement Review existing courses, training programs, and instructional materials to identify opportunities to improve effectiveness, clarity, engagement, accessibility, and consistency. Develop appropriate formative and summative assessments aligned with established learning objectives. Evaluate whether assessments meaningfully measure learner understanding, skill development, or application rather than completion alone. Gather and analyze learner feedback, assessment results, participation information, and other available learning data to evaluate instructional effectiveness. Collaborate with the members of the Professional Learning & Knowledge Department, leadership, SMEs, and other stakeholders to identify opportunities for course revision and improvement. Recommend and implement revisions based on learner outcomes, organizational changes, updated practices, stakeholder feedback, and emerging instructional needs. Participate in periodic review of existing learning content to ensure materials remain accurate, relevant, effective, and aligned with current organizational practices. Contribute to the development and refinement of departmental standards, templates, workflows, and quality expectations for instructional content. Learning Technology & Brightspace Collaboration Collaborate with the Organizational Knowledge & Payroll Specialist as ASUA expands its use of Brightspace and develops its broader digital learning environment. Design instructional materials and learning experiences with consideration for their current and future implementation within Brightspace. Prepare course content and multimedia assets in formats that support effective use within learning management systems and other digital learning environments. Participate in the transition and adaptation of existing instructional content into Brightspace as ASUA's LMS infrastructure and practices develop. Develop increasing familiarity with Brightspace functionality and contribute instructional design expertise to decisions regarding course structure, learner experience, assessment, engagement, and presentation. Collaborate with PLK colleagues to establish scalable and consistent approaches to digital course design as ASUA's professional learning portfolio expands. Professional Learning & Departmental Collaboration Collaborate with members of the Professional Learning & Knowledge Department to support a cohesive organizational approach to professional learning, knowledge development, and learning technology. Contribute instructional design expertise to the planning of new professional learning initiatives and programs. Assist in identifying learning needs and determining when formal training, performance support, reference materials, or other interventions are most appropriate. Support the development of reusable instructional templates, production standards, design conventions, and other resources that improve the efficiency and consistency of course development. Stay current with emerging practices, technologies, and research related to instructional design, adult learning, digital learning, multimedia production, accessibility, and educational technology. Participate in departmental planning, meetings, project reviews, and continuous-improvement initiatives. Support the long-term development of ASUA's professional learning portfolio for internal and external audiences.
