Position Description Milwaukee Riverkeeper is a community-led, science-based organization working toward fishable, swimmable waterways in the Milwaukee River Basin. We provide a variety of educational and recreational opportunities to help community members of all ages build a lifelong relationship with our waterways. This role is key to achieving our goal of creating opportunities for connection, education, and engagement for youth around Milwaukee's rivers and Lake Michigan. This position will work with local schools to bring our rivers into classrooms, bring classrooms to our rivers, strengthen Milwaukee Riverkeeper's public outreach efforts, and identify new engagement strategies and educational opportunities. Responsibilities Communicate with local educators and facilitate programming for schools and community groups. Develop and update educational content on Milwaukee Riverkeeper's mission and programs: water quality, stream ecology, and special projects (plastics, road salt education). Organize and develop interactive activities and promotional materials that MRK staff and volunteers can use at community events. Collaborate with community partners on educational opportunities and projects. Gather, organize, and evaluate program data. Represent Milwaukee Riverkeeper at outreach events and public programs, as needed. Complete required monthly AmeriCorps administrative and service-related tasks. Qualifications The successful candidate may have the following qualifications: Associate degree or higher preferred, or equivalent experience Experience teaching or leading programming with youth Experience with curriculum development and classroom or group management Interest in learning about or knowledge of freshwater resources and conservation Proficiency in Spanish is a plus Strong attention to detail and interpersonal skills Excellent written and verbal skills Knowledge of basic software including Google & Microsoft products Ability to resolve routine problems independently Ability to prioritize work according to the organization's needs Willingness to work occasional weekends and evenings Commitment to the environment Valid driver's license preferred Must be able to attend mandatory AmeriCorps orientation September 14-18, 2026. Physical Requirements Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times. AmeriCorps Details:
This is a full-time year-long AmeriCorps position, with the option for a part-time position if preferred. Full-time members must commit to completing 1700 hours of service, averaging 34 hours per week from Sept 14, 2026 - Aug 31, 2027. Full-time AmeriCorps Members receive a monthly living allowance (approx. $857 gross pay every two weeks) and an educational award ($7,395) after successful completion of service, and are eligible for health insurance benefits. Hours, benefits, and stipends vary for part-time service.
