The primary purpose of the District Content Social Studies & English Language Arts Specialist is to work collaboratively with classroom teachers to support district efforts to increase student achievement in Social Studies and English Language Arts (ELA). The District Content Social Studies & ELA Specialist will support the development of teachers through professional development, instructional coaching, model teaching, data analysis, and training to ensure student success. The District Content Social Studies & ELA Specialist will also assist the Chief Academic Officer and principals in the development of short- and long-range plans for the enhancement of the Social Studies and ELA programs to meet the needs of all student populations.
Job Summary:
Instructional Strategies/Curriculum:
Works with teachers (in teams or individually) to refine their knowledge and skills. Methods of instruction may include in-class coaching, peer observation, co-teaching, and modeling effective instruction using a gradual release model. Mentors teachers for the purpose of improving Social Studies and English Language Arts instruction and building their capacity to support others. Establishes a coaching partnership with teachers. Responsible for supporting and evaluating the district's Social Studies and English Language Arts curriculum and instruction for assigned grade levels. Plans and conducts periodic evaluations to assess the need for changes in the Social Studies and ELA programs. Identifies measurable goals for coaching interactions. Meets with Social Studies and ELA teachers on assigned campuses to discuss instructional delivery, curriculum alignment, and implementation of TEKS. Observes classroom instruction regularly for Social Studies and ELA teachers on assigned campuses; provides feedback and assistance to facilitate improvement and innovation. Demonstrates instructional strategies with students in the classroom for teachers identified as needing support through modeling and coaching techniques.
Data:
Obtains and uses evaluative findings, including student achievement data, to examine curriculum and instructional program effectiveness for the assigned subject areas. Presents content-related data to teachers and administrators.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Assists teachers in the development of local assessments aligned to Social Studies and ELA standards. Assists teachers in developing rigorous, engaging instruction that supports all learners. Works with teachers to develop and implement effective intervention strategies and instructional supports. Collaborates with teachers and administrators to make instructional decisions based on what is best for students. Assists teachers and staff in improving student performance on state assessments by supporting teachers in disaggregating and interpreting Social Studies and ELA data. Supports classroom instruction through modeling, coaching, and mentoring. Creates logically sequenced pacing guides for assigned grade levels and content areas. Develops campus/district common and formative assessments. Plans and presents district-wide professional development related to Social Studies and English Language Arts instruction. Assists with the assessment of instructional material needs and purchasing for assigned content areas. Attends regional content-related leadership meetings. Gathers and analyzes data for assigned subject areas. Collaborates with grade-level and content-area teams to plan effective instruction. Attends professional development as appropriate. Maintains a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members. Uses effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly. Works cooperatively with the Chief Academic Officer and campus administrators in developing and supporting instructional programs for Social Studies and ELA teachers.

Qualifications Profile Certification/License:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited university; Master's degree preferred. Valid Texas teaching certificate in assigned content area. GT training/certification preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience within Social Studies and/or English Language Arts. Successful classroom management that facilitates a high level of student engagement. Experience working with at-risk students and/or Title I campuses preferred.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Deep understanding of instructional pedagogy and best practices in Social Studies and English Language Arts. Demonstrated success as evidenced by student achievement results in assigned content areas. Strong knowledge of current Social Studies and ELA Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Experience interpreting and disseminating state assessment data. Strong knowledge of curriculum design and instructional practices in Social Studies and ELA. Knowledge of district instructional initiatives. Skill in instructional coaching and supporting teachers with varied backgrounds and experiences. Experience developing and facilitating professional development. Strong leadership, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Ability to work effectively with diverse populations. Ability to evaluate instructional programs and teaching effectiveness. Ability to plan and provide prescriptive instruction aligned with campus and district goals.
