POSITION TITLE
2920 SPEC
ADAPT PE INSTRUCTION SPECIAL EDUCATION 11 MONTH PROF I GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK
This is a program specialist position within the Special Education Department. The adapted physical education specialist is responsible for coordinating all aspects of adapted physical education within the Suffolk Public Schools System. Major responsibilities include consultation, program design, in-service training, evaluation, program placement, and monitoring of students (all exceptionalities) in all educational facilities. This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS
This position description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties, knowledge or skills associated with Maintain compliance with state and federal regulations. Design programs that provide services in the least restrictive environment for achieving individual goals and objectives. Develop supplemental curriculum and evaluation tools for the existing regular physical education program. Provide information to stakeholders regarding adapted physical education, recreation and leisure activities, and accessibility to programming for students with disabilities. Provide professional development to individuals and groups throughout the division as needed and/or requested. Develop and maintain an adapted P.E. resource website for educators to further enhance their knowledge of adapted P.E. and provide practical activities for their students. Meet regularly with P.E. staff and provide training and consultation to ensure provision of adapted activities for students with disabilities Arrange for facility, transportation for recreation and athletics; coordinate and monitor the leisure skills program held during the school day. Assist and/or consult with schools to coordinate/plan for field days and other activities to ensure inclusion of students with disabilities. Coordinate recreation and athletic programs and events for students with disabilities. Distribute informational materials received from the therapeutic recreation department and other sources relating to recreation and athletics for students with disabilities. Assist in providing practicum training sites for undergraduates at local universities to gain experiences with persons with disabilities in the physical educational setting. Develop and expand Suffolk Public Schools adapted physical education program. Consultant to the local Special Education Advisory Committee. Additional Duties Performs other related tasks as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the principles and methods of adapted physical education-including recreation and athletics for disabled youth. Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups. Knowledge of general school and special education practices and procedures. Knowledge and implications of IDEA and Section 504. Ability to handle students with physical limitations safely and effectively. Demonstrate and awareness of safe, ethical, and legal educational practices. Respect for student confidentiality. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the English language in written and verbal content. Requires adequate strength to handle and lift students with severe physical limitations, and to manage adaptive equipment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum of three (3) years adapted P.E. experience and completion of all fieldwork education requirements. Bachelor's degree in P.E. Master's Degree in adapted P.E. from an accredited education program preferred. Virginia teaching certification in Physical Education
EQUIPMENT
Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copier and telephone.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
(Travel) Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
