Job Description

We are looking for a committed Instructional Specialist to support daily instruction in the Culinary Academy's JumpStart (dual enrollment) program, which serves high-school students preparing for advanced culinary training. This role also assists with Bruin Café retail operations when needed. The Instructional Specialist will guide students in hot foods, cold foods, and baking, while modeling strong customer service and professional kitchen behavior. The position includes hands-on teaching, helping students build solid technical skills, and ensuring they are prepared to move successfully into the Academy's degree program. This is a temporary position through at least Fall of 2026. This position is housed at the Tech Center, but may report to other locations in order to meet the needs of the position. Demonstrate culinary skills. Model proper techniques in hot foods, cold foods, and baking. High-school instruction. Deliver daily instruction in the JumpStart program. Support retail lab instruction. Guide students during daily operations in the student-run Bruin Café. Provide practical feedback. Help students strengthen their hospitality and food service skills. Maintain a positive customer experience. Promote professionalism and quality service in the retail environment. Work with diverse populations. Collaborate effectively with students, staff, and community members. Work flexible hours. Some evenings and weekends may be required. Assess student learning. Evaluate students through quizzes, tests, papers, group work, and presentations. Use varied teaching methods. Adapt instruction to meet different learning levels and abilities. Provide academic and career guidance. Support students' educational and professional development. Respond to communication promptly, replying to all student and Blue Ridge CTC emails within 24 hours. Meet with students as needed. Offer support, clarification, and guidance outside of class. Submit daily/ weekly attendance and meet all grading deadlines set by the Registrar and home-based high school. Attend Culinary Program meetings and contribute to program goals. Education Associate's degree in culinary arts, food service, or related field desired Experience Two years of industry-related experience preferred Previous higher education teaching experience preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) Ability to operate a cash drawer with mathematical skills Excellent verbal and written English skills. Valid Driver's License Physical/Work Demands Perform physical job duties. Regularly stand, lift, bend, and stretch as part of daily work. Must be able to stand for at least 4 hours. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Temporary position intended to work through at least Fall 2026. Position open until filled.
