Job Description

Join our team as a part-time, Lead Instructor, for a well-established Kung Fu and Kickboxing Academy looking to add support for existing children's classes and potentially round out some new ones. Classes are Tuesday through Saturday, afternoon to early evening and mornings to early afternoon on Saturday with the possibility of expansion. We teach ages 3 up to teens, grouped as 3-5yr olds and 6+. While we often encourage teens to join our adult/teen classes, younger teens may still be more comfortable in the Juniors classes; maturity and aptitude can often inform the decision on the transitional ages of students and their class that best suits them.
We are looking for:
A martial artist and/OR accredited fitness expert who specializes in teaching children preferably with experience in education or child development to help with our children's programs.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead & Inspire:
Conduct engaging classes specifically designed for children, ensuring a balance of technical instruction and "educational play" while embracing our teaching philosophy of "Integrity, kindness, wisdom and bravery."
Safety First:
Supervise all activity to ensure proper technique and injury prevention.
Class Management:
Maintain a disciplined yet positive atmosphere; use effective behavior management to keep students focused, motivated and building good habits.
Communication and Teamwork:
Communicate instructions to class clearly and provide updates on student progress to the
Lead Instructor Mentorship:
Act as a positive role model, helping students develop life skills like sportsmanship, perseverance, and confidence, and voice. Cultivate a positive daily environment that not only keeps students engaged, but where they leave with impactful and positive memories of training.
Community Accountability & Professional Boundaries:
Martial Arts may become a lifelong practice for our students; instructors must teach knowing this student may be in our community for the next 30 years. Our unique balance of traditional-education & modern-business regularly calls for Performance Teams and Competitions Teams, or, more casual, celebration banquets or cultural ceremony events. While no extra working hours can be guaranteed for these extra-activities; any staff participating must prioritize their professional boundaries and limit contact with students or younger staff members.
Cultural Sensitivity & Multilingual Environment:
Must enjoy teaching students and working alongside people of diverse backgrounds and beliefs. Discrimination of any kind won't be tolerated. Additionally, our business is "Kung Fu." So while working, instructors should be immersed in our Traditional Chinese Kung Fu environment and respecting those traditions.
For example:
exemplify values of a "sihing / sijeh" or "Sifu," without overly objectifying or caricaturing the culture. For instance, learning to count and name techniques with proper Cantonese pronunciation in class is extremely important.
Also important to us:
Finding appropriate ways to include your own topics or personality in the lesson!

Classes cover traditional kung fu & modern combat sport/self defense topics. (Forms days vs sparring/padwork days structure, Highly specific things will still be taught by our "Sifu" experts) Martial Arts Experience for
Lead of Kid's Programming:
Experience in martial arts preferred but will consider someone with a thorough fitness (or dance) and children's education background. You must genuinely enjoy working with children. Prior experience in childcare, youth coaching, or physical education is a must.
Energy & Presence:
Ability to command a room and keep 15 students engaged for 40-60 minutes with most of the parents present and watching.
Reliability and Availability:
Our students count on consistency; we need someone dependable and punctual who exemplifies our teaching philosophy. Availability for Tiger Team and Junior classes are a must, which take place after school hours and also on Saturday mornings to early afternoon. Instructor Training & Maintaining Your Practice
  • At least once a month, attend instructor/staff workouts as paid-time.
More than once a month is extra and unpaid self-training, but connects to our international community of Kung Fu schools.
Background Check:
Must be willing to undergo a standard background check for working with minors.
