Classroom Teaching Full Job Description THE JOB:
Main pottery wheel instructor, teaching throwing on the pottery wheel (alongside a secondary instructor) every weeknight, with extra class times available. This will include lessons/demos for beginners as well as being available to teach members how to get to that next level they are working on achieving.
ABOUT THE CLAY HOLE
As you now probably know, we recently opened the world's most epic, fully-loaded community pottery studio right here in Draper... The Clay Hole. We're talking state of the art, 10k square feet, hundreds of monthly members, thousands of tools, 500+ commercial glazes, 100+ underglazes, 29 pottery wheels, massive work tables to spread out, private shelves for every member, a giant kiln that could fit a recliner inside... And all that is just the tip of the iceberg. And while we have a truly state-of-the-art studio, the best part here is the people: the people you work with, the members who come back every single week, and the owner... Dan Pearce, who has one of the world's biggest social media pottery followings. He built this to be a community-first, pottery second business, and it shows. The energy is through the roof whenever you walk in.
HOW WE WORK
Our structure is simple: "open studio classes" five times/week and open studio (without instructors) three times a week. That means members can come get their days in seven days every week. They buy a full month of membership at a time, and they get to choose what days they come. In every open studio class we have a main instructor and a "trade instructor." You are applying to be our main wheel throwing instructor. This job means you'll need to be here on the following schedule: Now through
Labor Day:
Monday-Thursday:
6 PM to 10:30
PM:
Besides our evening class schedule (which is the job you're applying for), you can also teach Monday morning class if your schedule permits it and you want to make more money.
After Labor Day:
Monday-Friday:
6 PM to 10:30
PM:
After summer (the slow season) we will need you to cover Friday evenings as well when we go back to our full weeknight schedule.
PAY:
You'll earn up to $19/hour to start. You'll get $17/hour guaranteed, and a $2/hour bonus every pay period so long as you've been on time every shift and there haven't been any major problems. Once you are here six months, you will get a $1/hour raise on the guaranteed.
EXTRA BENEFITS
As a main instructor, you will receive free full Purple Level membership (one of our highest levels with access to almost everything), a huge private shelf, as well as massive discounts on clay, firings, and monthly bonus drawings (up to five hundred bucks). You'll be able to come in during off-times to work on your own pottery, all while having access to pottery supplies, equipment, and space like you've never seen before. You'll also be allowed to bring a friend or partner once a month absolutely free.
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
We need you to have prior studio teaching experience. We need you to be fully proficient in teaching all pottery wheel skills, including: coning, centering, pulling even walls with extreme proficiency, and have the skill to reproduce any standard form. We need you to be able to throw (consistently) at least 6 lbs of clay We need you to be able to throw all types of clay We need you to be an awesome and helpful personality who isn't afraid to jump in with all personality types, converse, instruct, guide, and keep the community aspect of my classes strong. The communities we build in these classes is everything. We also need you to engage with all members of the class, not play favorites, and keep yourself busy teaching instead of hanging out with friends. We need you to be reliable. We need you to be permanently available every single class you're assigned. We need you to be honest. Always. Without fail. We need you to have a deep love and passion for pottery and ceramics. We need you to enjoy and thrive in a laid back community environment. This isn't your grandma's pottery studio. Students bring (ahem) beverages to share, there aren't a lot of language filters, etc. We also need you to be a positivity-filled person. We have a zero tolerance for staff showing negativity toward the owner, each other, our business, or our community.
IF YOU'RE INTERESTED
Submit an application and a note telling me about you and your experience with pottery. If I think you'll be a good fit, we'll have a FaceTime interview. If you still seem like a good fit, I'll need you to come in for a second interview and to show me that you have proficiency in the studio and in a teaching scenario.
Pay:
$19.00 per hour
Benefits:
Employee discount Flexible schedule Application Question(s): Are you 100% at ease in a more free and relaxed workplace environment? Do you agree to keep all negativity out of The Clay Hole? How many lbs of clay can you throw with ease? How many years of consistent pottery wheel experience do you have? Are you fully and permanently available every Monday 10AM-10:30 PM and Tuesday-Friday 4PM-10:30PM? Do you have experience teaching the pottery wheel for studio classes? If so, how much and how long?
