The Director of Teaching and Learning assists the Superintendent of Schools in coordinating, supervising, and elevating the educational framework across both districts. Working closely with administrators, teachers, and families, the Director plans, develops, and maintains a rigorous, equitable, and relevant curriculum, effective instructional practices, and a comprehensive, balanced assessment system. SPS is a PK-8 school district serving approximately 1,500 students in three elementary schools and one middle school. SBRSD enrolls approximately 900 students from the towns of Berkley and Somerset at Somerset Berkley Regional High School. The ideal candidate is a visionary educator who: Possesses strong knowledge and proven experience in leading comprehensive curriculum development and renewal cycles. Demonstrates a deep understanding of current research and best practices in teaching, learning, and instructional technology integration. Guides teachers and professional learning teams in implementing balanced, high-quality assessment practices. Models expected professional behaviors and instructional excellence. Uses qualitative and quantitative data strategically to guide instructional decisions and close achievement gaps. Keeps student growth, well-being, and equity at the center of every leadership decision. Plan and provide ongoing professional development that supports the district's strategic plan and school improvement plans Ability to facilitate, embrace, and advance school and district initiatives Ability to gather and analyze data in order to facilitate data review discussions to improve instruction and student achievement Strong communication, organizational, and teamwork skills Performance Responsibilities - Curriculum Development and Instructional Leadership Coordinate and integrate curriculum and instructional services across both elementary and secondary levels. Formulate, plan, and oversee a continuous curriculum review cycle to facilitate the ongoing development, implementation, and evaluation of the district's academic programs. Facilitate meaningful vertical and horizontal content area discussions among teachers across schools and grade levels. Oversee the selection of evidence-based textbooks, digital resources, and high-quality instructional materials that support all learners. Collaborate with the Director of Technology to provide training and coaching to teachers for the effective integration of technology into daily lessons. Assessment and Data-Driven Instruction Coordinate, plan, organize, and manage state and local assessments, including comprehensive, balanced district assessment frameworks. Analyze, interpret, and communicate student assessment results and accountabilitydata to key stakeholders, including the Superintendent, School Committees, and faculty. Gather and utilize data pertinent to the district's programs to facilitate targeted data review discussions aimed at improving instructional delivery and student achievement. Guide teachers and instructional teams in implementing best assessment practices that inform daily instruction. Professional Development and Leadership Support Formulate, plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive professional development program for teachers and administrators that supports the district strategic plan and individual school improvement plans. Model expected leadership and instructional behaviors, establishing a culture of mutual respect, high expectations, and continuous growth. Partner with school leaders and principals to cultivate a supportive environment where teachers are empowered to reach their fullest potential. Support the implementation and advancement of school and district-wide strategic initiatives. Program Administration, Grants, and Budget Support Assist the Superintendent in the development of the district budget, specifically pertaining to curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional learning needs. Seek, apply for, and manage appropriate competitive educational grants. Write, submit, and oversee compliance for Federal entitlement grants, including Title I, Title IIA, and Title IVA. Coordinate and support specialized instructional programs, including the English Learner (EL) program and Home School instruction reviews. Other Professional Responsibilities Attends School Committee meetings and other public forums when appropriate to present on curriculum, data, and instructional initiatives. Maintains cooperative professional relationships and open communication with colleagues holding similar positions in regional and state networks. Performs such other related educational assignments as may be deemed necessary by the Superintendent of Schools.
