DIRECTOR OF TEACHING AND LEARNING JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Teaching and Learning provides leadership for implementing an effective curricular, instructional and professional learning program that enhances student learning. The Director of Teaching and Learning ensures the District's commitment to equity is integrated into all facets of program initiatives.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Sustain and advance a commitment to District values, vision, goals and strategic plan. Focus on leading all stakeholders in support of the district's commitment to equity and for students furthest from educational justice. Provide instructional leadership, coaching and professional learning for teachers and administrators to improve school performance and improve educational outcomes for students. Design, facilitate, and model professional learning on culturally responsive and evidence-based instructional strategies including Multi-Tiered System of Supports. Provide direction, leadership, and support in implementing District policies and procedures as they relate to curriculum, instruction and professional learning. Coordinate the selection, acquisition, and management of instructional materials including chairing the District's Instructional Materials Committee. Provide leadership for the District Course Approval and Review Committee. Direct the work of all curriculum adoption committees according to established Board policies and procedures. Provide district leadership and support for and operational management of the BEST mentor program. Develop and manage the central budget for all new curriculum adoptions K-12 and professional learning. Coordinate all district professional learning, including District waiver days and the New Teacher Institute in August. Serve as a key member of the District Instructional Leadership Team which coordinates district work in curriculum, instruction, assessment, special education, student services, multilingual education, categorical programs and professional learning. Advance and contribute to the learning community of school and district administrators by sharing learning, and insights on emerging practices. Lead system-wide efforts as necessary to support improvement of the district's academic and well-being outcomes. Model and facilitate an inclusive culture that promotes the ongoing improvement of teaching and learning for students and staff of all backgrounds. Design and promote a coherent system of continuous learning and collaboration; use of qualitative and quantitative data to inform decisions; feedback and professional learning. Stay current of ongoing Federal and State initiatives and evidence-based practices related to curriculum, instruction, and professional learning. Advise and assist staff in addressing State requirements and District initiatives. Manage and align staff and fiscal resources and program compliance; write and monitor relevant grants. Oversee the operation of the elementary science distribution center. Conduct program evaluations and make recommendations for improvement. Partner with colleagues to ensure curriculum, instruction and assessment efforts align to the district's commitment to equity and are culturally responsive and relevant. Hire, supervise, and evaluate district certificated coaches/TOSAs, (teachers on special assignment
  • content specialists) and classified program staff.
Implement and comply with Federal and State laws, district policies and other guiding principles, and State Code of Professional Conduct. Maintain consistent attendance and conform to regular work hours specified under contract. Other related job duties as assigned by supervisor(s).
JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of curriculum, instruction, assessment and programs, and specifically culturally relevant curriculum and evidence-based instructional strategies to improve academic outcomes and close gaps between subgroups of students. Knowledge of coaching, and professional learning evidence-based practices to support instructional leadership of principals and team performance. Knowledge of the role of administrators in fiscal management and program compliance. Knowledge of state and federal rules and regulations that apply and govern the operation of a public school. Knowledge of the application and implementation of school board policies and procedures especially as it relates to instructional materials adoptions. Knowledge of inclusionary best practices, including but not limited to multi-tiered systems of supports and universal design for learning frameworks. Skills in leading and sustaining school improvement to enhance academic outcomes and close achievement gaps between subgroups of students. Skills in hiring, supervising and evaluating staff. Skills in attracting and retaining staff of color. Skills in project and program management. Skills in time management, prioritizing, and organization. Skills in resolving conflict, problem-solving and proactively addressing issues and grievances. Skills and ability to effectively communicate in a variety of settings with culturally diverse constituencies. Skills in promoting and engaging parents and families with the school community. Skills in effective decision-making, problem-solving and group facilitation. Skills and ability to evaluate systemic practices that positively and/or negatively affect student needs. Ability to develop, articulate and implement a vision and strategies for viable and culturally responsive and relevant curriculum and instruction that promotes student achievement for all students, as well as professional success for staff. Ability to promote and foster a culture of continuous improvement and quality performance through feedback and ongoing support. Ability to build an environment of trust, teamwork, and effective communication. Ability to systemically focus and align various initiatives, strategies and resources. Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbal, with diverse people, including those in racially, ethnically and socio-economically diverse communities. Ability to lead conversations and discourse on topics related to race, class and equity. Ability to identify and address personal, cultural and institutional bias. Ability to adapt to changing work priorities. Ability to make decisions and resolve complex issues in a timely manner. Ability to utilize district and community resources to address student and program needs. Ability to effectively manage available fiscal and personnel resources to meet organizational goals and needs. Ability to negotiate issues with relevant parties to meet district requirements and needs. Ability to reflect and take feedback to improve practice and performance. Ability to work with outside agencies.
QUALIFICATIONS
Possess or be eligible for a Washington Administrator Certificate. Possess or be eligible for a current Washington State teaching certificate Master's degree or higher in educational administration and/or curriculum and instruction, or related field. Minimum five years of experience as a principal and/or educational director or leader in a related field preferred. Significant experience at scale in leading innovation, teaching, curriculum, professional learning and assessment. Significant experience in working through multiple layers of management in organizations to achieve results. Experience teaching youth under the age of 21 and leading adult learning experiences. Experience working directly with people from diverse cultural, racial, ethnic, gender, sexual orientation, ability and socio-economic backgrounds, preferred.
