Essential Job Duties North Carolina State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Molecular Renal Physiology and Modeling at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. This position is a key component of the Translational Kidney Health Center of Excellence, an initiative designed to integrate clinical nephrology with advanced mechanistic research to accelerate discovery in kidney health across species. In this role you will develop an innovative, externally funded research program focused on the molecular and cellular mechanisms governing kidney function, injury, repair, and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and/or acute kidney injury (AKI). Areas of emphasis may include, but are not limited to, molecular signaling pathways, epithelial transport biology, inflammatory and fibrotic mechanisms, regenerative responses, and microphysiological or in vivo modeling platforms. Additionally, you will establish strong interdisciplinary collaborations with clinical nephrologists at NC State and with partners in biomedical engineering, genomics, and data science across campus, as well as with colleagues at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. You will play a central role in building a fully integrated translational pipeline that connects clinical caseload and biobanking resources to mechanistic validation and therapeutic innovation.Duties and Responsibilities:
Apply cutting-edge scientific knowledge and advanced experimental methodologies to develop impactful solutions for complex kidney diseases affecting both animals and humans. Develop and sustain an innovative, independently funded research program in molecular renal physiology and mechanistic modeling, with emphasis on kidney disease. Leverage NC State's extensive clinical nephrology caseload and biobanking resources to enhance translational rigor and clinical relevance. Foster collaborative relationships with Duke University, the University of North Carolina, and partners within the Research Triangle Park biotechnology ecosystem. Secure competitive extramural funding (e.g., NIHR01, USDA
AFRI, foundation, and industry-sponsored awards) to support research activities and trainee development. Support and advance leadership in comparative medicine by promoting the translation of discoveries from veterinary patients to human health applications. Mentor DVM students, PhD students, DVM-PhD trainees, postdoctoral fellows, and/or clinical house officers, contributing to a robust translational training environment. Participate in graduate and professional teaching in areas such as renal physiology, molecular pathogenesis, systems biology, translational modeling and clinical nephrology/urology. Engage in interdisciplinary center-building initiatives, including collaborative program project and center-level grant development. Serve as an advocate for enhancing the visibility, impact, and national reputation of the College's research, teaching, and clinical service missions. Clinical duty within the Nephrology-Urology service if desired (up to 10 weeks per year). This is an exceptional opportunity for a creative and forward-thinking investigator to advance both human and animal health through excellence in research and teaching. You will get to contribute to the education of veterinary and graduate students, mentor trainees at multiple levels, and help expand the College's national and international reputation in comparative and translational medicine. We seek a dynamic scholar whose work will build upon existing institutional strengths while opening new scientific frontiers within the College of Veterinary Medicine.
