Job Description

CDL-A Driving Instructor Position Summary Cypress Truck Lines is seeking a qualified and safety-focused CDL-A Driving Instructor to train and mentor new and current commercial drivers. The CDL-A Driving Instructor is responsible for providing classroom instruction, behind-the-wheel training, safety education, and coaching to ensure drivers meet company standards and FMCSA regulations. This position plays a critical role in developing safe, professional, and compliant CMV drivers. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Conduct classroom and behind-the-wheel training for CDL-A students and company drivers. Instruct trainees on FMCSA regulations, Hours of Service (HOS), vehicle inspections, defensive driving, load securement, and company policies. Evaluate trainee driving skills and document progress throughout the training program. Provide coaching and corrective instruction to improve driver safety and performance. Train drivers on proper use of ELD systems, trip planning, and DOT compliance requirements. Demonstrate proper pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspection procedures. Monitor trainee performance during road tests and field evaluations. Ensure all training materials and records are completed accurately and maintained properly. Identify trainees who may require additional instruction or are not meeting company standards. Promote a positive, professional, and safety-oriented training environment. Assist recruiting and safety departments with driver onboarding and orientation activities as needed. Maintain current knowledge of FMCSA, DOT, and company safety regulations. Report accidents, incidents, or safety concerns immediately to management. Qualifications Valid Class A CDL required. Minimum of 3 years verifiable CDL-A driving experience preferred. Clean MVR and stable safety record required. Previous driver training or instructional experience preferred. Strong knowledge of FMCSA regulations and DOT compliance. Ability to effectively communicate and coach drivers of varying experience levels. Strong leadership, patience, and interpersonal skills. Ability to complete training documentation accurately and timely. High school diploma or GED preferred. Physical Requirements Ability to enter and exit commercial motor vehicles safely. Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and climb for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Work Environment Combination of classroom, terminal, and over-the-road training environments. May require flexible scheduling, including weekends or overnight travel depending on training needs. Preferred Skills Experience with ELDT training programs. Knowledge of ELD systems and driver technology platforms. Bilingual communication skills are a plus.
