Maher Garden Center Trainer/Instructor Location:
Aquidneck Ave.
Middletown, RI Schedule:
Part Time
POSITION SUMMARY
The Garden Center Trainer/Instructor provides operational support and inclusive hands-on vocational training for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and other students. Builds community relationships with the Maher Garden Center and develops and promotes the activities and programs of the Garden Center. Ensures that all participants are given the opportunity to create and learn in a retail and garden shop setting to develop lifelong skills. The Garden Center Trainer/Instructor will also be responsible for hosting off site events to showcase the Harvesting Abilities Program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
TRAINING
Completes and maintains all required State mandated trainings such as Universal Precautions, CPR/First Aid, Signs and Symptoms of Illness & Injury and Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospitals (BHDDH) core trainings within 90 days of employment. Attend meetings and training sessions as required by BHDDH and
JLMC. DAILY PROGRAMMING
Collaborate with Maher Center staff, interns, volunteers and training program students. Teach fundamental horticultural skills (including planting, care and cultivation of plants, garden maintenance and safety protocols) to small group classes. Help to nurture important collaboration with educators, employers, volunteers and green industry partners to grow the program, serve community needs and expand opportunities for students. Runs Maher Harvesting Abilities Program . Work with volunteers and students to create beautiful plantings and displays on Maher Center campus and local Adopt-a-Spot Contribute to development and execution of themed promotions. Promote a healthy and safe environment while making positive contributions to workplace culture. Ensures each individual's rights are protected. Treats individuals with dignity and respect.
HARVESTING ABILITIES PROGRAM
Teach Participants with IDD to grow Fresh herbs and vegetables. Collaborate with Admin to team schedule, and attend farmers markets. Teach participants in the program to market their work, educating the public about the power of inclusion in gardening.
Off Site Market Sales:
Planning, set up, event pop up work, break down and transportation too and from garden center.
COMMUNICATION
Observes individuals for any changes in behavior or health and reports changes to Executive Director and the delegating nurse. Observes individuals for evidence of injury or bruises and evaluates for changes in emotional and physical status. Reports noted problems to the Executive Director immediately and complete a written incident report form. Acts as a representative for James L Maher Center in a professional manner, when required, to families, service coordinators, State officials, community partners, local businesses and employers.
TEAMWORK
Treats all individuals and coworkers with dignity, respect and fairness. Provides support to other team members when individuals are having behavioral issues.
SAFETY:
Assists individuals when entering and exiting vehicles, if needed, as well and entering and exiting the building safely. Reports unsafe conditions, environment and equipment to the Executive Director. Follows safety protocols to foster a safe working environment.
ALL OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED JOB REQUIREMENTS
Valid Driver's license . Ability to lift/push/pull 50 pounds .Ability to work weekends and at off site locations .A favorable National Criminal Background check along with OIG clearance .High school diploma or GED, trade school or industry-specific certificate desired but not required .Teaching, coaching or mentoring experience involving people with special needs.
