Job Description

at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Illinois, United States Job Description The Department of Education at Elmhurst University invites applications for a full-time visiting lecturer beginning August 2026. We are looking for a qualified educator to teach undergraduate courses in secondary (PK-12/5-12) education, as well as education prerequisite courses. The position will begin in Fall of 2026 and require on-campus presence for teaching. This is a one-year appointment that may be renewed for a second year.
Position Status:
Exempt Salary Range:
$53,000 - $58,000. This is the expected salary range for this position. The actual salary offered will depend on a candidate's experience and education, and departmental budget. Responsibilities Teaches seminars and general methods courses for the Secondary (PK-12/5-12) programs. Teaches one or more prerequisite courses focused on educational foundations, educational psychology, or education for students with exceptionalities, based on background and expertise. Is available to teach in-person during the day and some evenings; teaches a load of 8 courses per year over the fall, January, and spring terms. Demonstrates a passion for teaching a diverse student population and setting high expectations for student success. Demonstrates proficient and creative technology use; is able to grade, manage, and set up course modules and activities using the Blackboard learning management system. Collaborates with the Department leadership team and other middle/secondary instructors to discuss program articulation, implications of student data, and personalized student support strategies. Schedules on-campus office hours during the week to meet with students. Is available for on-campus meetings during the semester. Other Responsibilities Demonstrates a strong commitment to continuous improvement. Supports the mission, vision, and values of Elmhurst University. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Doctoral degree or ABD in Curriculum and Instruction or another field as appropriate. Maintains current pedagogical content knowledge including knowledge of National and Illinois Learning Standards in the fundamental learning areas. Previous teaching experience in middle school (5-8) and/or high school (9-12). Experience teaching in higher education. Strong organizational and collaboration skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Knowledge and application of culturally responsive pedagogy in teaching. Self-reflective practitioner who engages in reflection on practice and professional development that leads to high-quality teaching. Preferred Qualifications Experience teaching culturally relevant pedagogy. Endorsed in a content area (science education preferred). Experience in supervising student teachers either as a mentor teacher or college supervisor. Working Conditions/Physical Requirements The essential functions of this position are primarily performed in an indoor setting with limited exposure to outdoor weather conditions. Work is often sedentary in nature and requires remaining in a stationary position for extended periods. Required abilities include speaking and hearing for in-person and virtual communication, using close and distance vision when reading documents or viewing screens, and performing tasks with repetitive fine motor skills. Work may require occasional lifting, bending, carrying, or otherwise moving objects weighing up to 15 pounds.
