BASIC FUNCTION
Under the direction of the Principal, the middle school assistant principal functions as the administrative and executive assistant to the school principal.
TYPICAL DUTIES
(Responsibilities will include but not be limited to): Assists the school principal in all activities related to the school's curriculum, programs, personnel, and facilities, as assigned. Assumes assigned responsibility for curriculum development, including instructional materials and supplies, technology, and textbooks. Coordinates various school activities; such as, assembly programs, rallies, commencement exercises, contests, student/staff recognitions, and achievement awards. Administers student discipline programs, as assigned, including student counseling, parent and teacher conferences, and liaison with local law enforcement and social service agencies. Participates in assigned administrative procedures and reports; such as attendance, discipline, and various periodic reports to the Superintendent. Assists in the selection, employment, and performance evaluation of certificated and classified personnel in the school; including employment interviews, classroom visits, inservice training, student-teacher and teacher observations. Coordinates safety and health care services and activities, as assigned; such as community-based programs, evacuation drills, and violence prevention and control. Acts as co-chairperson and/or representative for various general public relations functions and school and community activities, such as awards night, back to school night, parent and community activities, and special events. Assists in supervising the maintenance of the school's equipment, facilities, and general premises. Participates in the organization and implementation of extra-curricular activities, as assigned, making certain that events are conducted in an orderly manner, disturbances are quelled, crowds are controlled, and safety and health precautions are followed. Administers student activity program, including student government activities, associated student body budgets, and assists with the total supervision of all school public performances. Assists with school counseling, guidance, attendance, Special Education and other programs designed to assist students in meeting high academic standards. Provides administrative support for the District's summer school services. Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Valid California Teaching Credential Valid Administrative Services Credential (or Certificate of Eligibility) Five years of classroom teaching experience Valid California driver's license Must reside within 45-minutes of the GUSD Administration Office
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bilingual in English/Spanish Masters Degree Previous administrative experience
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
School reform research and implementation strategies Human needs Curriculum development including infusion of technology School finance and budgeting Collective bargaining Administration of district policies, local, state and federal laws pertaining to schools, staffing organization, selection and supervision of personnel. Skilled in effective communications including initiating individual and group discussions, listening, clarifying, facilitating interaction among group members Verbal skills to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people with varying educational and sub-cultural backgrounds Research, reading, public speaking Writing skills to effectively convey ideas, reports, letters, memorandums and survey questionnaires understanding of goal setting techniques including needs assessment and evaluation High degree of self-restraint, judgment and strategies in dealing with a variety of people, adversaries and advocates under varying situations and conditions High degree of skill in defining problems, collecting information, establishing facts, evaluating alternate solutions, and drawing valid conclusions Effective screening of applicants, conducting job related interviews, selecting queued candidates, training and evaluation of personnel.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
(consideration will be given to reasonable accommodation): Sufficient hearing to conduct in-person and telephone conversations. Sufficient physical mobility to move about the campus and drive a car. Sufficient vision to read printed material. Ability to speak in an understable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversational distance, on the telephone, and in addressing groups. Physical, mental, and emotional stamina to endure long hours under stressful conditions. Standing and sitting for long periods of time. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard. During crisis situations, may require moderate to significant physical work and lengthy periods of standing.
OTHER CHARACTERISTICS
Willing to work irregular hours/days including evenings, weekends and holidays for supervision of school activities and programs, and on-call for emergencies. Willing to travel locally. Willing to work at any school location and be assigned.
