Blue Oak is seeking a full-time, dynamic PE teacher and athletics director to join our team. The ideal candidate will infuse creativity and fun into their program and understand how to provide rigor and extended learning experiences within the context of a progressive environment. Blue Oak teachers bring positivity, collegiality, strong work ethic, and a commitment to building warm and supportive relationships with children into the school each day. Providing differentiated and extended learning experiences is essential. The PE program highlights fitness, health and wellness, skill- and team-building, and sportsmanship. The successful candidate will teach PE, coach in our after-school athletics program, serve as the Athletics Director (AD), and work collaboratively with all faculty and the other PE teachers.
Teaching:
Teach lower school and middle school PE classes Create developmentally appropriate progressive curricula, establish a nurturing and engaging classroom environment for all students, and work collaboratively with colleagues Develop and implement a distinct and integrated PE and Health program that follows a developmental progression Design lessons which model and encourage inquiry, active participation, real-world engagement, and cultural competency Foster a warm and inclusive classroom community Differentiate lessons and activities to meet the physical, academic, and socio-emotional needs of all learners Observe and evaluate student's progress, providing regular feedback Instruct students both individually and in group, adapting teaching methods to meet students' varying needs, interests, and learning styles Meet with parents and advisory teachers to discuss student's progress and maximize student learning Purchase and maintain PE equipment Perform other school duties including chaperoning field trips, performing duties (such as carpool), attending meetings, and school events
AD:
Coordinate the coaching for three seasons for our after-school athletics program Develop and communicate clear and specific vision and goals for the BOS Athletics program, our teams and our student athletes Bring a holistic approach to health, wellness and character-building to the BOS athletics program Provide clear, consistent and appropriate communication with students, parents, and coaches Develop and demonstrate best practices for athletic teams Intentionally build community and foster an atmosphere of teamwork and collaboration among and between students and adults across BOS Create and maintain a safe and healthy environment for all students Strike an appropriate balance between competition and collaboration, allowing all to actively participate in team sports Actively represent BOS at the sports league level, including by attending AD meetings and games and meets, as required, in the evenings and on weekends Organize and schedule team practices and games, including transportation, referees, score keeper, etc. Plan, coordinate, and oversee all school athletic activities including team sports, school athletic camp programs, and other events Recruit, hire, and train coaches, ensuring they understand the philosophy and mission of the School, and have all required training (e.g., CPR, First Aid, concussion, mandated reporter, etc.) and relevant certifications Purchase, track, distribute, and collect athletic uniforms and game equipment Serve as an ambassador for BOS admissions and student retention Collaborate closely with Community Programs to support shared goals and to share resources Manage and care for the BOS gymnasium and optimize the facility to help achieve our broader educational and strategic goals
Requirements:
AE/BA or MA in Kinesiology/PE/Education Three or more years teaching PE/coaching at the MS level Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills Familiar with best practices in teaching PE Understanding and appreciation of a progressive approach to teaching and learning Commitment to professional development, a growth mindset, social justice and multicultural education Experience in collegial collaboration related to planning, instruction, and assessment directly connected to student learning Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills Familiarity with best practices in youth athletics Understanding and appreciation of a progressive approach to teaching and learning Commitment to professional development, a growth mindset, social justice and multicultural education Outstanding communication, organizational, and project management skills Capacity to work professionally and respectfully with a broad range of constituents Flexibility in working with others and fostering team-building A long-range thinker who has the vision to anticipate future needs as well as the practicality to translate concept into action Strong sense of integrity, ethics, confidentiality, reliability, and accountability Positive problem-solving skills A self-starter with the ability to successfully manage various projects simultaneously, and the capacity to work under pressure of deadlines with grace and a sense of humor
