JOB SUMMARY
The Building Principal is responsible for providing instructional, operational, and cultural leadership to a school community that values educational excellence, strong relationships, inclusive practices, student-centered learning, and collaboration.
The successful candidate will be a visible, approachable, and relationship-driven leader who communicates clearly and consistently, supports staff and students thoughtfully, and fosters a positive school climate grounded in trust, accountability, belonging, and high expectations for all students and staff.
The principal will work collaboratively with students, staff, families, and district leadership to support strong instructional practices, social-emotional learning, positive behavioral systems, and equitable access to high-quality educational opportunities for all students.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of three (3) years of successful principal, assistant principal, or comparable educational leadership experience preferred
Minimum of five (5) years of classroom teaching experience required, preferably at the elementary level
Demonstrated knowledge of elementary instructional practices, child development, and evidence-based teaching and learning practices
Experience supporting inclusive practices, MTSS, special education, and social-emotional learning
Strong communication, collaboration, and community-building skills
Master's degree or higher required
Massachusetts DESE certification as Principal/Assistant Principal
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent deems appropriate and acceptable

Instructional Leadership
Creates and maintains a welcoming, inclusive, and student-centered school climate where all students feel safe, valued, and supported
Demonstrates strong knowledge of effective elementary instructional practices, developmentally appropriate learning, and evidence-based educational strategies
Supports high-quality instruction and continuous improvement through meaningful feedback, collaboration, and professional learning
Promotes academic excellence while supporting the social-emotional well-being of students
Supports strong Tier I instruction and effective systems of intervention and enrichment through MTSS structures
Leads staff in implementing clear, consistent, and supportive behavioral expectations and positive behavioral support systems
Demonstrates strong understanding of special education, English Learners (EL) and inclusive practices
Uses data thoughtfully and collaboratively to support student learning and school improvement
Supports curriculum implementation while valuing teacher voice, expertise, and professional judgment
Demonstrates a willingness to listen, learn, and build upon the existing strengths and traditions of the East Elementary community

Management and Operations
Assumes responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the school building and grounds
Supports the development and implementation of safe, orderly, and effective schoolwide systems and procedures
Demonstrates strong organizational and operational leadership skills
Oversees implementation of state assessments and district initiatives as appropriate
Develops and maintains a school budget aligned with district priorities and school needs
Family and Community Engagement
Communicates openly, clearly, consistently, and proactively with families and the broader school community
Builds strong partnerships with families grounded in trust, collaboration, and mutual respect
Values and seeks stakeholder input in meaningful and constructive ways
Works collaboratively with the PTO and community organizations to strengthen school culture and student experience
Demonstrates the ability to navigate difficult conversations thoughtfully, respectfully, and professionally
Ensures families feel welcomed, informed, heard, and connected to the life of the school

Nurtures and sustains a collaborative school culture focused on reflection, growth, innovation, and continuous improvement
