Other responsibilities include: Ensure compliance with all applicable special education laws and regulations, as well as implementation of IEPs to meet student needsSupervise and evaluate special educators, including team chairs, special education teachers, related service providers, and paraeducators. The Director of Middle School Special Education will visit classrooms for formal and informal observations and provide verbal and written feedback on best practices both formally and informallyLead hiring committees to identify candidates within district guidelines for hiring and acquisition, in collaboration with principalsWork with stakeholders, including parents, educators, and others, to identify and execute to best educational solutions for students, including managing conflict and differing views according to the mission and values of Shrewsbury Public SchoolsWhile the team chairs will lead most special education evaluation and review meetings with parents, educators and other stakeholders at each building, the Director of Middle School Special Education will oversee this work and support as neededConduct professional development, workshops, coaching sessions, and meetings and/or develop other methods to improve instructionCoordinate and implement all state and federal special education regulations at Sherwood and Oak middle schools for the school year and the extended school year programHire and support supervision of paraeducator staff Assist the district Assistant Superintendent for Student Services in the preparation of the departments budgetAssist the principal in grouping students and scheduling classroom assignments for students, educators, and paraeducators at both middle schoolsPerform other duties, which are consistent with applicable laws, regulations and district protocols, as directed by the Assistant Superintendent for Student Services Preferred candidates: Possess an initial or professional license as a special education administrator, or alternatively, possess an initial or professional license in supervising/directing moderate special education teachersUse their knowledge, interpersonal skills, and data to inform sound educational decisions for studentsHave the ability to build the capacity of other educators through a variety of means including building trust and credibility with others, working thoughtfully and professionally to solve challenges, modeling best practices, and demonstrating strong communication and interpersonal skillsIn general possess excellent written and verbal communication and facilitation skillsHave experience with the oversight, coordination, and execution for Individualized Education Programs and providing direct services for special education services at the middle levelDemonstrate knowledge of middle school structures and the team conceptPossess solid knowledge of state and federal special education regulationsSalary for this position will be based on the SEA contract. Director of Middle School Special Education2026-2027 School YearShrewsbury Public Schools is currently accepting applications for a Director of Middle School Special Education to join our district leadership Team. This position is available on July 1 and will support Sherwood Middle School (Grades 5 & 6) and Oak Middle School (Grades 7 & 8). The base salary will be determined by placement on the Unit A (teacher) salary grid plus a stipend based on years of leadership experience. This position works the regular school year plus 10 days for additional administrative leadership work. As a member of the middle school administration team the Director of Middle School Special Education will have shared decision-making responsibility to serve all students at Sherwood and Oak middle schools. The successful applicant will be responsible for the coordination and supervision of the special education program across the middle schools, working with both the elementary and high school levels to provide continuity and communication across levels.
