August 1, 2026 Birmingham Public Schools, one of the premier suburban school districts in Oakland County, Michigan seeks an extraordinary instructional leader, with a deep understanding of current best practices in teaching and learning, to serve as Principal of Birmingham Covington School (BCS). BCS is a nationally recognized and award-winning school with a science and technology focus serving students in 3rd-8th grades.
JOB SUMMARY AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Demonstrated skills and experience as an instructional leader. Commits to the belief that each stakeholder in the school community deserves to be given individual attention and to be treated with dignity and respect. Unwavering commitment to advocate for the needs of all students. Confidence in leading staff conversations around equity, unconscious bias and achievement gap data that result in classroom strategies with students to address these issues. The ability to closely monitor teaching practices and ensure both rigor and best practice is occurring in all classrooms; Ability to design opportunities to empower students, staff and parents to be integrally involved in all aspect of the school's culture and climate. Demonstrates a willingness and aptitude for public speaking in both prepared and extemporaneous formats. Embraces change and innovation and is able to envision and actualize learning beyond the traditional walls of the classroom and the school. Commits to high visibility by demonstrating a consistent presence in the school community and daily communication with all stakeholders using multiple forms of communication. Understands the complexities and nuances of hiring, evaluating, inspiring, and mentoring all staff members to exceed expectations. Analyzes and shares student data and educational research as the foundational principles of Professional Learning Communities. Knowledgeable about the school improvement process. Models and articulates high expectations Networks with universities, as well as county, state, national and international organizations to assure updated knowledge of best practices and teaching and learning in the 21st Century. Meets regularly with parents, students and staff to assist in meeting the needs of the diverse group of learners at Birmingham Covington School. Implements character education principles into all facets of the school community. Understands the school's responsibility to prepare students for their futures in this rapidly changing global society. Understands that intellectual and thoughtful risk taking is the basis for growth and improvement. Empowers all staff, students and parents to be integrally involved in all aspects of the school community.
QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate selected for this assignment will be the one who offers the best combination of qualities in accordance with the following standards and requirements: 1. The minimum level of education is a master's degree. Training should include areas of school administration, supervision, curriculum and child development. 2. A minimum of five years' administrative experience and substantial experience at the elementary or middle school level in a variety of leadership roles is preferred. 3. Strong background in STEM education, project based learning and design thinking. 4. Evidence of the candidate's ability to provide quality leadership must be demonstrated through: excellent communication skills; a strong sense of honesty and integrity; strong problem solving skills; the ability to use a variety of leadership styles including both situation and collaborative; skill and sensitivity in working with all members of the school community; ability to plan, organize and execute the full range of administrative tasks associated with the operation of the school; skill in creating a positive, open, enthusiastic and well-organized teaching and learning environment; skill in fostering the continued growth of staff members; and a commitment to community education concepts. 5. Candidates must hold or be eligible to obtain a valid Michigan administrative certificate.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
: $108,353-137,165. Salary will be commensurate with the candidate's education and experience. Additional compensation package includes degree pay for MA+15, MA+30 or EdD/PhD, board paid TSA, merit pay, mileage stipend, vacation, personal days and comprehensive employee benefits program.
