A Director of Special Education is responsible for the planning, development, coordination, and management of all special education programs, services, budgets and personnel. Ensures compliance with state and federal regulations governing the delivery of services to students with disabilities.
Guilford Preparatory Academy is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated K-8 Exceptional Children (EC) Director to lead and oversee the school's special education programs for students with diverse learning needs. The EC Director will ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment, and work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and staff to meet the individualized needs of all students with disabilities. This role requires leadership, strategic planning, and a deep understanding of special education laws, instructional strategies, and student support services.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Program Development:
Provide visionary leadership for the EC department, including the development, implementation, and evaluation of services for students with exceptionalities. Ensure that all special education services are compliant with local, state, and federal laws, including IDEA and Section 504. Lead the development and review of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), ensuring appropriate services, goals, and accommodations for each student. Collaborate with teachers and staff to ensure that inclusive practices are implemented across all grade levels and classrooms. Oversee the identification, evaluation, and placement of students in special education programs, ensuring that assessments are accurate and thorough.
Instructional Support & Supervision:
Provide instructional leadership to EC teachers, paraprofessionals, and support staff, ensuring effective teaching strategies, behavioral interventions, and accommodations for students with disabilities. Lead the development and delivery of professional development opportunities for faculty and staff related to special education, inclusion, and best practices in supporting students with disabilities. Monitor the implementation of IEPs and ensure that services are provided as specified in students' plans. Support the development of differentiated instruction across all content areas to meet the needs of students with varying abilities. Provide direct support to classroom teachers in the implementation of individualized and small-group instruction, behavior management strategies, and other interventions.
Collaboration & Communication:
Serve as the primary point of contact for families of students in the EC program, ensuring open communication and collaboration. Facilitate regular meetings with parents, staff, and outside agencies to discuss student progress, adjustments to IEPs, and the effectiveness of interventions. Collaborate with school leadership, counselors, and outside professionals to create and implement multi-disciplinary support plans for students with disabilities. Coordinate with community agencies, therapists, and other external resources to support students and families.
Data Analysis & Compliance:
Oversee the collection and analysis of data related to student progress, IEP implementation, and program effectiveness. Ensure the accurate and timely completion of all special education documentation, including IEPs, assessments, progress reports, and compliance reports. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of special education regulations, guidelines, and best practices, and ensure the school's compliance with state and federal mandates. Prepare and present reports for school leadership, the school board, and other stakeholders regarding the status of the EC program, student achievement, and compliance.
School-Wide Leadership:
Contribute to the development of school-wide goals and initiatives, ensuring that students with disabilities are included in all academic and extracurricular activities. Advocate for the needs of students with exceptionalities within the school community and promote a culture of inclusivity and respect. Lead school-wide initiatives related to the integration of students with disabilities into general education settings, fostering a collaborative and supportive learning environment.
Qualifications & Skills:
Master's degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or a related field. Valid certification in special education or related area, with experience in K-8 special education. Minimum of 5 years of experience in special education, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role. Deep understanding of special education laws, including IDEA, Section 504, and state-specific regulations. Proven ability to lead teams, manage staff, and coordinate multiple programs and initiatives. Strong knowledge of evidence-based instructional strategies, accommodations, and interventions for students with exceptionalities. Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
