Position Summary The After Care Assistant supports Hickory Day School's extended-day program by providing a safe, welcoming, and well-supervised environment for students after the regular school day. This position works closely with the After Care Director and other staff to supervise students, facilitate activities, assist with daily routines, and ensure students are released safely to authorized adults. The ideal candidate is dependable, patient, positive, and enjoys working with children of varying ages. Key Responsibilities- Provide active and attentive supervision of students participating in the After Care program.
- Maintain a safe, positive, and welcoming environment consistent with school expectations and policies.
- Assist with student check-in, attendance, and dismissal procedures.
- Ensure students are released only to authorized parents, guardians, or approved individuals in accordance with school procedures.
- Supervise and engage students during indoor and outdoor play, homework time, snacks, games, crafts, and other age-appropriate activities.
- Help prepare, organize, and clean up activity areas, supplies, snacks, and program spaces.
- Encourage respectful behavior, cooperation, good sportsmanship, and appropriate interactions among students.
- Reinforce school expectations and assist with addressing minor student behavior concerns in a calm, consistent, and age-appropriate manner.
- Communicate student concerns, injuries, incidents, or unusual circumstances promptly to the After Care Coordinator or appropriate administrator.
- Follow school procedures related to student safety, emergency response, illness, injury, and incident reporting.
- Maintain appropriate confidentiality regarding students, families, and school matters.
- Work cooperatively and professionally with faculty, staff, students, and families.
- Assist with other After Care duties as needed to support the safe and effective operation of the program. Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred; qualified high school students who are legally eligible to work and demonstrate appropriate maturity and dependability may be considered.
- Previous experience working with children in a school, childcare, camp, recreation, or similar setting preferred.
- Ability to supervise and interact positively with children across multiple grade levels.
- Dependable, punctual, and able to maintain a consistent work schedule.
- Strong communication, judgment, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to follow established school policies, safety procedures, and staff direction.
- Successful completion of required background checks and other employment screening. Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Work is performed in a school setting, including classrooms, hallways, and outdoor spaces
- Regularly required to stand, walk, and actively engage with students for extended periods of time
- Ability to sit, bend, kneel, stoop, and reach as needed to support student learning and classroom activities
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds (e.g., classroom materials, supplies, or assisting young children when appropriate)
- Requires visual and auditory ability to supervise students, maintain safety, and effectively deliver instruction
- Ability to manage a classroom environment that may include moderate noise levels and high levels of activity
- May involve outdoor duties in varying weather conditions
- Requires the ability to respond quickly and appropriately in emergency or safety situations
- This role requires energy, flexibility, and a genuine enthusiasm for working with children in a dynamic, student-centered environment.
