Job Description
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Achievement Coaches for Literacy are teachers who have both content area and instructional expertise.
The Achievement Coaches will work with the Assistant Superintendent and Building Principal(s) to promote
best instructional practices to increase student achievement across individual classrooms, grade levels, and
schoolwide.
Priorities include:
analysis of data to identify classrooms with specific needs or targets for
increased achievement, meeting with teachers to determine areas for professional growth, modeling
lessons, supporting classroom instruction, and coaching teachers one-on-one. The Achievement Coaches
will work as a member of the district's Teaching & Learning Team to develop coherence across the district in
teacher ability to provide instruction that (1) establishes high expectations for all students and is
academically rigorous, (2) is based on district core curriculum and state standards, (3) aligns to the learning
needs of diverse learners, and (4) enhances student sense of engagement in and ownership of learning.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Work as a member of a collaborative team to ensure that curriculum and instructional initiatives are
student focused and aligned with the district's Strategic Plan and the goals of School Improvement
Plans.
- Assist the school principal in analyzing achievement data to prioritize classrooms and grade levels for
achievement coaching.
- Provide high quality professional learning experiences to enhance teachers' understanding and
implementation of the core curriculum and research based instructional practices to increase student
achievement.
- Support teachers in attaining their professional growth goals by using coaching strategies that gradually
release responsibility for implementing instructional practices to the teacher (for example, co-planning,
modeling, co-teaching, side-by-side coaching, and observing)
- Analyze teacher practice through ongoing classroom observations, data analysis, and examination of
student work
- Provide clear and direct feedback to teachers based on analysis of practice
- Assist in the collection and analysis of assessment data to inform curriculum and instructional practices
across the district.
- Develop teachers' capacity to collect and analyze multiple sources of data to improve Tier 1 learning
and interventions.
- Help to foster grade level and schoolwide collaboration focused on high expectations for all students,
academic rigor, and the academic and social emotional supports needed to increase achievement.
- Other duties as may be assigned by the Assistant Superintendent
SALARY:
Base salary per BWEA contract plus $2,500 stipend for work above and beyond the school day/year,
including estimated 2-4 hours per month after school and up to 5 days during the summer at the discretion of
the Assistant Superintendent.
EDUCATIONAL/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED
- Current Rhode Island teaching certificate (Elementary or ELA preferable)
- Advanced coursework in literacy (preferred)
- At least 5 years of successful teaching experience (preferred)
- Expertise in Into Reading and iReady
- Preference given to candidates with prior successful coaching or teacher leader experience,
- Willingness to complete training and provide professional development in literacy instruction
