Job Description

Position Summary:
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville is seeking a full-time Academic Advisor (20 hours per week) & Administrative Specialist (20 hours per week) within the College of Business, Industry, Life Science and Agriculture (BILSA). This position will provide comprehensive academic advising to students, supporting informed decision-making regarding course selection, degree requirements, and academic planning. The role promotes student success, retention, and program completion by delivering timely, accurate, and holistic advising services in a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive environment. The position also provides broad administrative support to the Dean's Office, exercising discretion and independent judgment in support of departmental and institutional operations. This is a full-time, 2-year position eligible for benefits and paid leave, with an annual salary of $45,000.
Key Job Responsibilities:
Academic Advising:
Receives and responds to academic inquiries in accordance with established policies and procedures. Serves as a primary point of contact for students, providing guidance on academic requirements, educational options, and career exploration; refers students to appropriate institutional resources. Maintains curriculum expertise and assists with policy/curriculum exceptions as appropriate. Monitors student academic progress and develops intervention strategies; makes referrals as needed. Supports delivery of advising events such as workshops, panels, and guest speaker sessions. Maintains accurate and confidential student records in compliance with institutional policies and FERPA. Participates in campus advising initiatives and provides input on advising, recruitment, and co-curricular programming.
Academic Coaching:
Works one-on-one with students, including those identified as "at-risk," to build effective learning strategies and self-regulated learning skills. Supports students in identifying barriers to success, setting goals, and developing action steps. Assists with development of time management, organization, and study skills.
Administrative Support:
Coordinates logistics and secures resources for meetings, events, travel, and unit operations. Serves as a primary point of contact and provides information to students, faculty, and staff. Prepares, reviews, and maintains records and documents for accuracy and compliance. Develops and distributes communications in accordance with established policies and procedures. Maintains electronic and physical records systems. Compiles data and prepares reports to support unit operations. Assists with administrative processes including operational, personnel, and budget-related matters. Participates in meetings and committees representing the unit or program.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in counseling, communication, education, psychology, student services, business, or a related field. Minimum of one (1) year of professional experience in academic advising, academic coaching, student services, admissions, transfer student support, or related higher education/student support programs. Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills with the ability to effectively engage students, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to work with students using advising and/or coaching approaches to support academic and career development. Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Demonstrated ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality, including awareness of FERPA and related ethical standards. Proficiency with standard software applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and ability to quickly learn new systems. Experience delivering presentations or facilitating programs for small and large groups.
