YEAR 4TH GRADE DUAL LANGUAGE TEACHER SILVERMINE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL POSITION DESCRIPTION
This will be a full-time dual language teacher that will teach multiple classes of social studies, integrated with Spanish Language Arts in the target language. The teacher will team with the other dual language teachers that teach Native Spanish and social studies.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaches identified subjects in Spanish, maintaining the target language in an immersion setting. Collaborates with English partner teacher to develop and implement team teaching model. Follows the scope and sequence of the instructional program as defined and approved by the Norwalk Board of Education and Biliteracy Unit Frameworks. Manages the classroom and individual student behavior utilizing a restorative practices approach to maintain an advantageous learning environment. Prepares lesson plans in collaboration with the team that achieve clear language and content objectives, uses appropriate SIOP and biliteracy techniques, and serves the needs of all learners in the classroom. Maintains accurate and complete records as required. Conducts parent/teacher conferences with partner teacher(s). Designs clear and specific learning assessments that capitalize on emergent bilinguals' abilities. Works with the partner teacher to holistically assess emergent bilinguals' progress in both languages on an ongoing basis, and identifies areas of intervention, if needed. Uses interim reports, report cards, and/or conferences to keep parents up-to-date regarding student progress in both languages. Plans whole group, small group, and individualized instruction to foster academic, social, emotional, and cultural growth. Maintains a positive learning environment that encourages open communication between the teacher and learner. Maintains a positive school community image that encourages ethical student behavior through the implementation of the PBIS framework. Maintains ongoing communication with parents in either English or Spanish. Assists in the selection of textbooks, equipment and other education materials. Accommodates visitors to the classroom as a dual language model classroom. Establishes and maintains professional relationships. Participates in professional learning by attending seminars and workshops to improve biliteracy instructional practices and positively affect student achievement.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS
Experience working with children. Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, in the target language. Effective, active listening skills. Ability to work effectively with others in a close, collaborative environment. Organizational and problem-solving skills. Knowledge of the development of the emergent bilingual student. Experience using strategies for second language learners such as SIOP, the Bridge, and other biliteracy strategies.
QUALIFICATIONS CSD
Active Bilingual PK-8 Education 902 AND CSD Active 305 Elementary Active CT certification in Social Studies, Middle School required as required by the Connecticut State Department of Education.
