PART I:
SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Teacher of English as a Second Language (ESL) and/or Bilingual-Spanish provides specialized instruction designed to support the academic achievement, language development, and personal growth of multilingual learners. Working collaboratively with school administrators, instructional staff, and families, the ESL teacher designs and delivers linguistically responsive instruction, develops and implements curriculum and lesson plans, and uses assessment and data to guide instruction. Through culturally responsive practices, effective use of instructional technology, and advocacy for equitable access to educational programs and services, the ESL teacher ensures that students acquire English proficiency while meaningfully engaging in rigorous academic learning experiences aligned to district and state standards.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES A. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college Three (3) years of teaching experience preferred
B. CREDENTIALS
Illinois Professional Educator License with appropriate ESL and/or Bilingual-Spanish endorsement(s)
C. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of second language acquisition theory and research-based ESL instructional practices. Knowledge of Illinois Learning Standards, WIDA English Language Development Standards, and ESL program requirements. Knowledge of culturally and linguistically responsive and trauma-informed instructional practices. Knowledge of curriculum design and instructional planning for multilingual learners across content areas. Knowledge of assessment practices for multilingual learners, including language proficiency screening, progress monitoring, and formative and summative assessments. Ability to design, implement, and deliver primary instruction that supports English language development and grade-level academic learning. Ability to analyze student performance data to inform instruction, differentiation, and intervention. Ability to develop, implement, and document instructional plans, accommodations, and language supports aligned to student needs. Strong classroom management and learning-environment skills that promote engagement, belonging, and academic growth. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with students, families, and school staff. Ability to communicate clearly in oral and written form, including lesson documentation, progress reports, and family communication. Ability to integrate instructional technology and digital tools to enhance language acquisition and learning. Ability to maintain accurate instructional, assessment, and compliance records in accordance with district and state requirements. Ability to exercise professional judgment, confidentiality, and ethical practice. Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

FUNCTIONS

Provide primary instruction as the teacher of record for multilingual learners, delivering English language development and integrated academic instruction aligned to district and state standards. Design, implement, and revise standards-based curriculum, lesson plans, and instructional units that support English proficiency and academic growth. Establish and maintain a classroom environment that promotes language development, student engagement, and a sense of belonging. Develop and administer language proficiency and classroom-based assessments to monitor student progress and inform instruction. Analyze student performance data to guide instructional planning, differentiation, and targeted interventions. Provide differentiated instruction to meet the linguistic, academic, and social-emotional needs of multilingual learners. Integrate culturally responsive practices and instructional technology to enhance learning experiences. Maintain accurate and timely instructional, assessment, and compliance documentation in accordance with district and state guidelines. Develop and implement individualized language supports and instructional plans based on student needs. Communicate regularly with students and families regarding academic progress, language development, and program expectations. Participate in required screening, placement, progress monitoring, and reclassification processes for multilingual learners. Collaborate with school staff to support appropriate programming, transitions, and student services. Uphold district policies, procedures, and professional standards of practice. Participate in professional learning and continuous improvement activities related to ESL instruction and student achievement. Support the development of students' academic language, literacy, and communication skills across content areas. Foster positive classroom behavior and social development through clear expectations and restorative practices. Ensure instructional practices are aligned with WIDA standards, Illinois requirements, and district frameworks. Performs other duties as assigned
