Job Description

Fifth grade English/Language Arts (ELA) teachers in Tennessee public schools are responsible for delivering literacy instruction grounded in the Science of Reading and aligned with Tennessee Academic Standards. Operating under the direct supervision of the school principal, this role focuses heavily on transitioning students from learning to read to reading to learn, bridging elementary foundational skills with middle school expectations.
Core Responsibilities Literacy Instruction:
Deliver rigorous, standards-aligned lessons across all literacy domains: reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language.
Evidence-Based Practices:
Implement structured literacy and foundational skills instruction using high-quality instructional materials (HQIM).
Differentiation:
Adapt curriculum for diverse learners, including those in Tier II/III Response to Instruction and Intervention (RTI²) , students with IEPs/504 plans, English Learners, and advanced students.
AssessmentData:
Use formative and summative assessments to measure student growth and adjust instructional strategies.
Collaboration:
Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) , faculty meetings, and collaborative planning with grade-level teams and instructional coaches.
Skillset :
Strong knowledge of the Science of Reading framework, excellent verbal/written communication, and digital proficiency with tools like Google Workspace or regional
Learning Management Systems QualificationsRequirements Licensure:
A valid Tennessee teaching license with appropriate endorsements (e.g., Elementary K-5, 4-8, or 6-8 ELA specialty).
Education:
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
Other:
Successful completion of state and federal background checks and E-Verify eligibility confirmation

Standing for long periods, bending, stooping, and maintaining the emotional coping skills necessary to handle student behavioral challenges throughout a standard school day.
