POSITION SUMMARY
Gardner School is seeking a dynamic, experienced, and highly skilled classroom teacher to join our community as the Homeroom Teacher in our 3rd-grade classroom (Wy'East). This is an exciting opportunity to collaborate with school leadership and faculty on growing Gardner's elementary school program and advancing the school's impact in the SW Washington and Portland metro area. We are looking for a compelling teacher who is committed to progressive education, inspired to innovate, and able to add value to our outstanding school. Our Elementary Homeroom Teachers work with parents, students, staff, and administration to create a learning environment that supports growth in both academics and social-emotional skills. An Elementary Homeroom teacher at Gardner brings curiosity, creativity, joy, and humor to our community. Play and experiential learning are central to our mission; therefore, the ideal teacher can differentiate instruction to maximize engagement and guide students through long-range thematic projects.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Instruction:
Provide effective and professional instruction, assessment, and classroom management. Incorporate tenets of progressive education, including experiential learning and a whole-child approach.
Collaboration:
Work with colleagues on curriculum development and the coordination of thematic projects across subjects. Integrate experiences between the homeroom and specialist classrooms.
Professional Growth:
Exhibit a growth mindset and work toward professional goals and development.
Communication:
Establish effective relationships with students and parents. Maintain professional, collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, and community partners.
Supervision:
Provide effective supervision to promote a safe environment on and off campus. This includes traveling with students on experiential activities (including potential out-of-state/overnight trips). As Gardner does not provide transportation, duties may include riding with parents/chaperones in personal vehicles.
Events:
Participate in community events outside regular hours, such as the Back to School picnic, curriculum nights, Book Swap, annual Auction, and the Snow Ball dance.
Activities:
Assist with non-classroom activities, including field trips, Gardner Market, Field Days, and Wheels in School.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Master's degree in education or a related field is strongly preferred; Bachelor's degree required.
Certification:
Washington State Teaching Certification (or current certification in another state) preferred.
Experience:
Familiarity with Bridges Math, Reading A-Z, Handwriting Without Tears, and thematic/multiple intelligence instruction is highly desired.
Environment:
Experience in independent, Montessori, or private school settings is helpful.
Skills:
Ability to create and modify lesson plans with built-in formative and summative assessments. Strong digital and verbal communication skills; a "curious and kind" approach to challenges.
Physical:
Able to meet physical requirements for light classroom duties combined with more strenuous duties consistent with outdoor experiential learning and off-campus trips.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Salary:
$38,000•$50,000 (10-month contract paid over 12 months).
Benefits:
100% employer-paid Medical; 50% employer-paid Dental. Participation in a Simple IRA (up to 3% match) and paid time off.
Summer Opportunity:
Optional opportunities to teach summer camps for additional pay.
