Part-Time Instructor of English General Statement of Duties:
The Department of English at Westfield State University invites applications for a Part-Time Instructor to teach undergraduate writing courses during the Fall 2026 semester. The successful candidate may be assigned up to two courses, including
ENGL 0101
Composition I and/or
ENGL 204
Rhetoric and Research. These courses are offered in person on campus at Westfield State University. Westfield State University is a public liberal arts institution committed to excellence in teaching, student-centered learning, and educational access. The English Department values writing as a tool for inquiry, critical thinking, communication, and civic engagement. We seek instructors who are committed to supporting students from diverse educational backgrounds and who can foster inclusive and engaging learning environments that help students develop confidence and proficiency as writers. Duties and Responsibilities Duties include, but are not limited to:
Essential:
Teach up to two sections of undergraduate writing courses, including Composition I and/or Writing and Research Develop and facilitate engaging, student-centered learning experiences that support writing development Provide timely, constructive feedback on student writing and progress Foster an inclusive classroom environment that values diverse perspectives, experiences, and ways of knowing Support students in developing critical reading, writing, research, and information literacy skills Maintain regular communication with students and respond to student inquiries in a timely manner Assess student learning and submit final grades in accordance with university policies and deadlines
Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
Master's degree in English, Rhetoric and Composition, Writing Studies, Education, or a closely related field Evidence of effective teaching and a commitment to undergraduate education Strong written and oral communication skills Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse student population
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience teaching first-year writing, composition, research writing, or related courses at the college level Familiarity with writing pedagogy that emphasizes process, revision, inquiry, and reflective practice Experience supporting students from varied educational backgrounds, including first-generation college students, dual enrollment students, and students transitioning to college-level writing Experience incorporating inclusive teaching practices and culturally responsive pedagogies Interest in collaborating with colleagues on writing instruction and student success initiatives
