Job Description

Position Description Wooster School is looking for an experienced English teacher to begin in August 2026, who is interested in joining the Upper School Humanities team. The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree and/or teaching experience in English or Writing. Candidates should also be voracious readers and seekers of new knowledge with a deep desire to foster that same disposition in our students. Experience as a teacher of writing at the secondary or postsecondary level is a plus. Applicants should be familiar with a workshop model of reading and writing. Applicants should also be curious, innovative students of the art and science of teaching and learning, as collaboration and professional learning are core elements of the Wooster learning community. As a Wooster teacher, the ideal candidate will embrace collaboration, creating, and co-designing with the grade level teaching team on effective writing and reading workshop experiences, and providing intentional, effective individualized feedback to developing learners. Demonstrating flexibility, a strong sense of humor, and fluency with technology is also essential. Wooster Teacher Learners Exhibit a desire and ability to collaborate and co-design with others; Are broadly open-minded and adventurous; Exhibit tolerance of some ambiguity; Encourage wondering, problem-finding, and investigating for yourself and others; Are ready and willing to consider other perspectives; Make plans strategically, but are ready to shift when reality strikes; Model metacognitive skills for our students; Believe deeply in the mission, beliefs, and values of Wooster, and subscribe to Wooster's culture of thinking and learning. Responsibilities Co-design a Humanities course in collaboration with a History teacher. Hold high expectations for every student. Provide necessary accommodations and modifications for the growth and success of all students. Plan, structure, and share lessons that are engaging, make students think every day, and are aligned with a year-long scope and sequence. Work as an active, collaborative member of the learning group, grade-level, content area, and school-wide teams. Keep students and parents well informed of student progress by providing regular feedback, clear learning intentions, and concise success criteria. Participate in school-wide professional development beginning in August. Seek continual feedback and coaching to develop as a teacher-learner. Be available and committed to ongoing verbal dialogue and conversations with the parents and the Wooster community. Perform necessary duties, including, but not limited to, advisory, after-school activities, and chaperoning. Experience/Qualifications Strength in writing instruction. At least 3 years of successful teaching experience. Commitment to co-designing this course with a History teacher. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Teacher certification preferred. Salary & Benefits This is a full-time, exempt position. Salaries are competitive with local independent schools.
