English Language Learner Teacher Detroit Friendship House Hamtramck, MI Job Details Part-time $18 an hour 1 hour ago Qualifications Teaching experience with English language learners (ELLs) ESL Education Multilingual Computer literacy English High school diploma or GED Literacy education Classroom experience Adult education teaching experience Teaching Full Job Description Detroit Friendship House is seeking a compassionate and culturally responsive English Language Teacher to teach adult English language learners from diverse immigrant and multilingual communities. The teacher will use the Ventures 4th Edition ESL curriculum as the primary instructional guide. This curriculum supports English language development while also building practical skills in digital literacy, career readiness, and everyday communication. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with adult learners and can create a welcoming classroom where students feel respected, encouraged, and confident practicing English.
Key Responsibilities:
Teach adult English language classes using the Ventures 4th Edition ESL curriculum. Plan and deliver lessons that support speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar, and everyday communication. Adapt lessons to meet the needs of students with different English levels, literacy levels, and learning styles. Use practical topics such as health care, school communication, employment, transportation, shopping, technology, and community resources. Support digital literacy and career readiness skills built into the Ventures curriculum. Create a respectful, supportive, and culturally responsive classroom environment. Track student attendance, participation, and progress. Support simple assessments, student feedback, and basic program reporting as needed. Communicate with program staff about student needs, progress, and referrals. Attend staff meetings, teacher trainings, or professional development opportunities as requested.
A strong candidate will:
Have experience teaching ESL, adult education, literacy, or community-based classes. Be familiar with Ventures 4th Edition or willing to teach from an established curriculum. Be comfortable supporting students with different English levels in one classroom. Be culturally responsive and respectful of immigrant, refugee, and multilingual communities. Be able to make lessons practical, engaging, and connected to students' daily lives. Be willing to maintain accurate attendance and progress records. Communicate clearly and work collaboratively with program staff. Qualifications Experience teaching adult English language learners preferred. High School Diploma required.
TESOL, ESL
certification, teaching credential, or related degree preferred Familiarity with Ventures 4th Edition preferred. Basic comfort using technology for lesson planning, communication, and classroom activities. Bilingual ability in Bangla, Arabic, or another community language is a plus. Experience in nonprofit, immigrant services, adult education, or community-based settings is a plus. Schedule This is a part-time position based on program needs. Classes take place MondayThursday. Occasional participation in meetings, trainings, field trips, guest speaker sessions, or special events may be requested.
