Position Description Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) is a renowned research institution with a vibrant, multicultural community. We are seeking a dedicated English Language Learning (ELL) Instructor to support our diverse population of postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and technical staff in improving their English language skills. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching English as a Second or Other Language (ESOL) and a passion for fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment. As an ELL Instructor at CSHL, you will provide comprehensive English language education to our community members, focusing on everyday communication, professional language needs, and cultural adaptation. This role involves working with individuals and groups, utilizing both commercial and internally developed materials to enhance fluency, confidence, and comfort in using the English language.
Position Responsibilities Instruction and Teaching:
Conduct individual and group lessons on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and practical life skills including shopping, car purchases, and medical services. Adapt teaching methods to meet the varying needs of students, focusing on improving conversational fluency and confidence. Use print materials primarily, with occasional use of online resources. Provide personalized feedback and create a supportive, non-judgmental learning environment. Review and provide feedback on scientific presentations and practice sessions.
Cultural and Practical Adaptation:
Address cultural unfamiliarity and practical challenges faced by ELLs, including advice on daily life tasks, relationship building, and community integration.
Program Development:
Develop and implement tailored instructional materials and activities that meet the diverse needs of ELLs. Support non-scientific staff (e.g., housekeeping and catering) with language training. The salary range and/or hourly rate listed is a good faith determination of potential base compensation that may be offered to a successful applicant for this position at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future. Bachelor's degree in English, TESOL, Education, or a related field. A Master's degree is preferred.
Skills & Experience:
Proven experience teaching English to non-native speakers, ideally in a multicultural academic setting. Strong understanding of the needs of English Language Learners, including those in scientific and non-scientific roles. Excellent communication skills and the ability to create a welcoming and effective learning environment. Ability to adapt teaching methods to various learning styles and needs.
