GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK
Under the supervision of the principal, the EL teacher's responsibility is to guide students toward the fulfillment of their intellectual, physical, and psychological potential while working with the EL student to close any English language proficiency gaps as identified with an annual language proficiency assessment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Classroom Planning, Instruction, and Management Humanize instruction by planning a program of study that meets the individual language needs of EL students Secure and prepare instructional materials in advance and show written evidence of preparation Plan purposeful assignments for student teachers, teacher assistants, and substitute teachers Assist in the evaluation, selection, and requisition of books, equipment, audio-visuals, and other supplementary materials Demonstrate knowledge of subject matter Diagnose, develop, and implement ELD plans in accordance with VDOE guidelines, in collaboration with core teachers Refer students to specialists when deficiencies are detected or suspected Serve as the school level specialist for English Learner students Implement all curriculum programs adopted system wide in a positive and efficient manner Participate in curriculum development appropriate to assignment Establish clear objectives for all learning experiences and communicate these objectives to students Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with students and families, using appropriate resources Make use of a variety of resources, materials, and methods in an effort to improve the effectiveness of instruction Speak clearly using fluent and appropriate language in well-modulated tones Evaluate pupil accomplishments on a regular basis Exhibit interest in what is being taught and in the needs of the student across the curriculum Confer with colleagues, students, and/or parents on a regular basis, advocating for EL students and their families Promptly and accurately handle routine matters involving reports, records, and monies Take all necessary precautions to protect and to maintain facilities, equipment, and materials Return materials to their assigned place or designated personnel promptly after use Emphasize and enforce safety factors within the classroom, building, and throughout school property As an extension of classroom management responsibilities, supervise students throughout the school as assigned or as circumstances require Maintain a disciplined atmosphere appropriate to the teaching environment Maintain a practice of good housekeeping for self and students to improve the learning environment Establish reasonable classroom rules with consistent enforcement occurring in a positive way Staff Relationships Assist in the formulation and implementation of policies and/or regulations, which are established by the School Board Attend and participate in staff meetings and serve on staff committees Serve as the case manager for all identified EL students in the specified schools Adhere to administrative regulations and directives Cooperate with administrative and supervisory staff in the evaluation process (to include the annual English language proficiency assessments) Establish and maintain cooperative relations with co-workers relative to school matters and ELD plans Professionalism Maintain high degree of professional ethics in activities in school and community Maintain respect for the worth and dignity of each student Participate in professional meetings and serve on and contribute to special committees Provide for professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced course work Assist in the planning and/or sponsorship of co-curricular activities Make provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day Cooperate with community agencies as they pertain to classroom activities Demonstrate a positive view of the philosophy and objectives of the school to parents and community Abide by adopted board of education policies and procedures Maintain a satisfactory record of punctuality and attendance Conduct all school related activities in a manner that serves as a positive influence on youth Perform other duties as required
