This is a non-tenure track appointment. The successful candidate will bring experience in companion animal population health, high-quality/high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN), shelter medicine, and community-focused clinical practice. This role offers a unique opportunity to integrate clinical service, teaching, and community engagement within a dynamic academic environment, with flexibility for full-time or part-time appointment depending on candidate interests and program needs. Primary responsibilities include delivering clinical instruction to veterinary students and interns, contributing to didactic teaching through rounds and formal coursework, and leading clinical outreach via a shelter medicine rotation serving partner animal shelters. The Clinical Instructor will mentor learners while overseeing medical care for a diverse caseload, including animals in shelters, foster care, and urgent care cases presenting for surrender through the local SPCA. Opportunities also exist to help advance community medicine initiatives that expand access to veterinary care for underserved populations, through collaborative partnerships, outreach clinics, and grant-supported programs. This position involves performing and supervising a wide range of surgical and medical procedures, including HQHVSN, dentistry, enucleations, amputations, and other common shelter medicine interventions. The Clinical Instructor may also contribute to the Primary Care Surgery (PCS) service at Cornell's Small Animal Community Practice, supporting student training in accessible, spectrum-of-care medicine and reinforcing the connection between community medicine and clinical education. Candidates must hold a DVM (or equivalent) and have at least two years of clinical experience, with demonstrated experience in shelter medicine and HQHVSN techniques; experience in community medicine or access-to-care programming is highly valued. The Maddie's Shelter and Community Medicine Program (MSCM) is a collaborative and mission-driven team, comprised of five full-time and one part-time faculty veterinarians, supported by four full-time and one part-time experienced licensed veterinary technicians, a program coordinator, and three interns. Clinically, we maintain a full-time partnership with a local shelter while also providing regional ambulatory shelter support. Our consultation service further extends our shelter impact, engaging with organizations regionally and nationally through remote and onsite collaboration, and increasingly supports community medicine efforts aimed at improving access to care. Located in Ithaca, the heart of the beautiful Finger Lakes region in Upstate New York, Cornell University is a globally recognized center for discovery, academic leadership, and service and is an exceptional place to work and study. The College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will create a climate that attracts students of all races, nationalities and genders. We seek candidates who will contribute to a collegial environment, strive for academic and service excellence, and help us to build diversity through a strong commitment to teaching and mentoring. The salary range for this position is $62,400-120,000 and will be commensurate with academic credentials, experience, and appointment type. For more information about the position, please contact Dr. Jessica Reed, jmr428@cornell.edu. Prospective candidates should upload their application materials to https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/31286, including: A personal statement summarizing shelter and teaching experience. Curriculum Vitae The names and contact information of three professional references. Completed applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, beginning June 1, 2026, until the position is filled. Offers higher than the published salary range might be considered to meet unique circumstances, qualifications, academic discipline, and experience. Faculty working in the laboratory/hospital must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire or provide documentation of current vaccination. Consistent with Cornell's practice, appointment to academic positions requires candidates to disclose relevant information about their prior employment including whether they have been found to have violated institutional or employer policies related to or governing unlawful discrimination and harassment, academic and research misconduct, or financial misconduct. Requirements Candidates must hold a DVM (or equivalent) and have at least two years of clinical experience, with demonstrated experience in shelter medicine and HQHVSN techniques; experience in community medicine or access-to-care programming is highly valued.
