Residence Life provides a home where William & Mary students may flourish both personally and academically. We do this by partnering with our residents to create caring and responsible communities.
Position Summary:
The Area Director of Residence Life is responsible for the management and daily operations of a multi-facility area housing 800-1000 residents and supervising 20-30 student staff members including Senior Resident Assistants, Resident Assistants, Community Manager and a Community Director. The Area Director will focus on community and leadership development, staff selection and training, crisis intervention, student conduct, and the coordination of facilities operations, in addition to participating in an on-call duty rotation. This is a 12 month live in professional position and includes a furnished apartment.
Other responsibilities include:
  • Works with colleagues in Residence Life to design, facilitate, and evaluate training sessions, workshops, and in-service programs for student staff and Community Councils advisors and officers.
  • Maintains accurate departmental records, including but not limited to Community Council budgets, check-ins and check-outs, conduct and care, and facilities concerns.
  • Assumes an active and visible role in the ongoing development of individual residents to support their maximum academic and personal success.
  • Initiates educational and student conduct actions as required; working closely with Student Accountability & Restorative Practices to ensure a supportive and collaborative approach utilizing restorative practices.
  • Monitors assigned facilities year-round, including the opening and closing of buildings, during summer (regardless of building use) and advise supervisors of conditions, issues, or changes and make recommendations for improvements to facilities.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Experience directly related to the position either working in Residence Life, Students Affairs, or similar. (Graduate Assistantships related to the position may count towards this requirement.) Experience supervising student employees. Demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity, mutual respect, equity, and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in student affairs, higher education leadership, counseling, or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training. Experience with conduct cases and knowledge of behavior management techniques. Prior experience supervising resident advisors or community assistants.

Full-time position with a required live-in residential component; employees must reside in designated on-campus housing. Position is restricted and dependent on available funding. May require additional hours beyond the standard work week, including nights, weekends, and some holidays. Designated as essential personnel, requiring work during university closures. Required to participate in an on-call duty rotation with other professional staff.

  • Administrative Oversight and Training Plans, facilitates, and evaluates staff meetings and in-services for area staff.
Collaborates with Residence Life staff to design, facilitate, and evaluate training sessions, workshops, and in-service programs for student staff and Community Council advisors/officers. Maintains accurate departmental records (e.g., Community Council budgets, check-ins/check-outs, conduct and care, facilities concern). Develop initiatives aligned with the department's community development philosophy. Presents programs for staff and residents based on expertise, interest, or need. Provides active oversight and support of Community Councils. Collaborates with Student Transition & Engagement Programs to support student transitions into, through and out of residence life. Administers residential government funds. 25%
  • Supervision Supervises and supports development of student staff. Participates in recruitment, selection, training, evaluation, and dismissal (as needed) of student staff Assists in selection of professional staff as needed. Collaborate with university departments to address and resolve student issues. 15%
  • Advising/Development of Residents Maintains an active and visible role in supporting residents' academic success.
Refers residents to appropriate student services as needed. Provides support and crisis intervention when necessary. Enforces and communicates State, University, and Residence Life policies and regulations. Initiates educational and conduct actions per institutional guidelines and policies. Collaborates with Student Accountability & Restorative Practices for student conduct and care reporting Provides leadership in self-determination and community development, including Community Agreements. 15%
  • Facilities Management Ensures timely change and adherence to check-in/check-out procedures.
Maintains accurate occupancy and vacancy records. Use and maintain knowledge of StarRez system. Monitors facilities year-round and reports conditions/issues. Submit service requests using FAMIS. Partners with Community Councils on facility improvement recommendations. Maintains common area inventories and conducts monthly inspections. Assesses damage and manages billing for student rooms. Collaborate with Building Services to address facility concerns. Manages core changes, key distribution, and inventory checks. Initiates billing for damages and loss of university property. Ensures safety compliance and supports emergency response efforts. Oversee opening and closing of assigned buildings each semester. 10%
  • Teamwork Participate in on-call duty rotation.

Salary Range:
$43,000
  • $45,000, commensurate with experience.
