Job Overview:
The Education Director leads the development, coordination, implementation, promotion, and evaluation of educational programs that align with River Bend Nature Center's mission. This role combines strategic planning with daily program execution. The Education Director ensures programs are well-organized, well-staffed, safe, and engaging for children, families, schools, and the community. This position requires strong leadership, clear communication, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a public-facing environment. The Education Director also plays a key role in advancing nature and science education and community impact through high-quality programming.

Job Duties:
Develop, plan, and execute educational programs such as Nature Preschool, school field trips, camps, family programs, outreach programs, and community education experiences aligned with organizational goals and applicable educational standards. Coordinate daily program operations, including scheduling, staffing, supplies, and program logistics. Facilitate and deliver educational programs on-site and off-site for diverse audiences. Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, collect feedback, and implement improvements. Lead, train, and supervise education staff and volunteers, setting clear expectations and ensuring accountability. Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and professional team environment focused on high-quality visitor experiences. Cultivate and maintain relationships with schools, families, and community partners to expand program reach. Communicate clearly and professionally with staff, participants, and partners; respond to inquiries in a timely manner. Ensure programs operate safely and consistently by following and enforcing organizational policies and procedures. Maintain accurate records related to scheduling, communication, incidents, and program outcomes. Identify operational needs early and communicate staffing, scheduling, or supply concerns to leadership. Manage educational resources, including time, budget, supplies, equipment, and facilities, to support efficient operations. Research grant opportunities, and assist with writing, submitting, reporting and managing grants to secure funding for educational programs. Represent the organization at community events and support outreach and public engagement efforts. Participate in professional development and apply current best practices in environmental and informal education. Perform other duties as assigned to support organizational goals.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in education, environmental science, biology, child development, or a related field, or equivalent experience Experience developing, coordinating, and delivering educational programs for children, schools, or the public Experience supervising staff, volunteers, or teams Enjoy working with children, families, and the public in a positive, engaging, and professional manner Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines Strong verbal and written communication skills Ability to take initiative, solve problems, and communicate concerns proactively Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed
Knowledge and Skills:
Knowledge of environmental education principles, conservation, and outdoor learning practices Understanding of curriculum development and age-appropriate teaching methods Ability to manage program logistics, scheduling, and resource allocation Ability to lead teams, provide direction, and maintain accountability Ability to build and maintain community partnerships Proficiency in office and communication software, including document creation, spreadsheets, and scheduling tools
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in environmental education, nature centers, museums, camps, zoos, parks, or similar settings Experience working with preschool and school-age children Knowledge of local ecology and natural history Experience with grant writing and program funding Experience managing program schedules and responding to program inquiries
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions Requires standing and walking for extended periods Requires sitting and computer use for extended periods Requires lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds Requires active participation in programs across the campus
