Job Description

Big Bend Community College (BBCC) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Resident Advisor.­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­ The Resident Advisor (RA) develops, coordinates and maintains a program within the community, which strives to provide a positive intellectual, emotional and social living environment for students. We seek individuals that have the ability to display sensitivity to and interest in people, neutrality, respect for the dignity and worth of the individual, open-mindedness on issues, degree of empathy, ability to handle autonomy, make decisions and his/her success within an academic community. The RA position is a 9 month position (September - June) with the option to work during summer term. This position is eligible for State or Federal Work-Study and for Non-Work Study students. Students must be available to work up to 16 hours per week. The total amount of hours will vary per quarter. To work at the college, you will participate in a movement. The primary responsibility of the Resident Advisor is to provide support, encouragement, and leadership to the community. The RA should be available to the residents and empower them to grow and develop as good citizens. The RA helps to facilitate a positive living and academic environment. These attributes are accomplished by the following: Build relationships with the residents in the community. Assist residents in developing relationships with each other. Hold residents accountable for their behavior. Educate residents on the policies and procedures of BBCC Residential Life. Promote student involvement in the campus community, activities, and events. Role model positive attitudes and behaviors. Help to facilitate an environment that allows students to meet their academic goals. Provide opportunities for residents to look at the world from different perspectives. Serve as a resource. Provide helping skills for residents in need. Plan and carry out activities and events as established in BBCC Res Hall programming model. The Resident Advisors are also responsible for the following administrative tasks: Ensure all Residence Hall (RH) policies and rules are adhered to and enforced fairly and equitably. Monitor halls and assist residents. Check-in and check-out of residents. Report to Director of Residence Halls Conduct and lead residence hall floor meetings. Sort, message, and deliver mail to residents. Keep track of resident occupancy and monitor for unregistered guests. Document policy violations. Depending on the number of residents, Summer RAs may be asked to work at the front desk for up to 6 hours a week. Report maintenance and facility concerns and conduct health and safety inspections. Responsible for monitoring the residence halls up to 16 hours a week for safety and security concerns (including other concerns such as alcohol use, illegal drugs or marijuana, acts of violence, or racism/hate crimes). Issue notices for violations of residence halls rules and report all violations to the Director of Residence Hall within 24 hours. Remain in Residence Hall overnight, unless excused by Director of Residence Hall. Open and lock outside building doors, kitchens, and rooms. Design and construct door decorations and residence hall decorations that coordinate with the overall residence hall theme prior to the beginning of each quarter. Responsible for general housekeeping items such as emptying garbage containers, sorting recyclables, and distributing furniture and furnishings to rooms. Meet with Director Residence Hall daily if issues arise, attend all staff meetings, and scheduled one on ones. Complete other duties as assigned by Director of Residence Hall At the time of application, candidates must possess the following: A minimum of two quarters or semesters of on-campus living at a college or university. Be enrolled in 10 or more credits for Fall Quarter 2026 and be in good academic standing. Residents Advisors are required to live in the community for which they are responsible. Possess a high level of maturity and must be responsible and trustworthy. Successfully complete the CSS 108 Student Leadership Course taught Spring Quarter. Interested students shall complete the BBCC online application. Students may also upload a current resume if they have one available.
