JOB DESCRIPTION

Social Studies Instructor Alternatives in Action is a non-profit organization that prepares youth with leadership potential for college, career, and community, empowering them to take charge of their lives and create positive change. This position serves Alternatives in Action High School (AIAHS), a charter high school in East Oakland supporting 100 students who haven't succeeded in traditional learning environments. Through intensive community-building, youth leadership development, project-based learning, and youth-adult partnerships, AIAHS prepares students to be college, career, and community ready. Our staff and student population are diverse and committed to quality work and community-building. Position Overview At AIAHS, teachers are considered coaches because they are more than instructors or facilitators. Based on the youth-coach model, we believe neither teacher nor student is passive in the relationship. The Social Studies coach will teach A-G approved Social Studies courses and be responsible for connecting academic content with contemporary issues, community projects utilizing a youth development approach. This is a full-time one-year only position. Instruction & Curriculum Teach up to five class periods daily, including courses such as Modern World History, U.S. History, American Government, and Economics. Potentially facilitate an Advisory and/or elective course. Design and deliver rigorous, California standards-aligned lessons that meet course requirements. Differentiate instruction and assessment to meet diverse learning needs and learning styles. Incorporate project-based learning, hands-on activities, technology, and other engaging instructional strategies that promote critical thinking and student voice. Student Support Build positive, supportive relationships that foster student engagement and belonging. Develop and monitor individual learning goals while supporting students' progress toward graduation requirements. Encourage student reflection, self-assessment, and ownership of learning. Provide up to two days per week of after-school academic support and intervention. Support school-wide operational and behavior expectations Collaboration & Professional Responsibilities Collaborate with colleagues to improve instruction, analyze student data, and support school-wide initiatives. Participate in staff meetings, family conferences, community events, and other school activities including occasional after-school, evening, or overnight community events and retreats for Alternatives in Action including Summer and Mid-year Staff Retreats Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and support needs. Engage in ongoing professional learning, including coaching, mentoring, workshops, and conferences. Preferred Qualifications Valid California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Social Science (or appropriate authorization). Experience teaching high school social science in diverse learning environments. Knowledge of culturally responsive teaching, project-based learning, and differentiated instruction. Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills. Commitment to equity, collaboration, and continuous professional growth. Bilingual English/Spanish skills preferred.
