August 2026 Maclay School seeks a thoughtful, student-centered educator to teach Sixth Grade Science and Social Studies as part of our Sixth Grade Academy, a program designed to support students during the important transition from lower to middle school. This role combines earth and space science with world geography in an integrated course that helps students explore how physical systems and human societies shape the world around them. The ideal candidate is energized by inquiry-driven learning and enjoys helping students investigate big questions about our planet. This teacher will inspire curiosity about the natural world and human cultures while helping students develop the habits of mind of scientists and geographers, including observation, analysis, evidence-based reasoning, and problem solving. You understand that sixth graders are at an important developmental moment, growing in independence while still needing guidance and support. You help students build confidence as thinkers and collaborators while cultivating a classroom environment where curiosity, creativity, and respectful dialogue thrive. You also value collaboration and reflection. As a member of the Sixth Grade Academy team, you enjoy working closely with colleagues to design meaningful learning experiences and continually refine your practice. Above all, you take joy in helping students grow into curious learners and thoughtful problem solvers who are eager to understand the world. Key Responsibilities Serve as a full-time Sixth Grade Science and Social Studies teacher within the Sixth Grade Academy Design and implement a curriculum with engaging lessons that integrate earth and space science with world geography Develop inquiry-based learning experiences that encourage students to ask questions, investigate evidence, and think critically about global systems Guide students in understanding connections between natural environments, climate systems, and human societies Use a variety of instructional approaches, including discussion, projects, simulations, and hands-on investigation, to support diverse learning styles Build a classroom culture that encourages curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and intellectual risk-taking Assess student learning through both formal and informal measures, using feedback and data to guide instruction and student growth Support sixth grade students as they develop independence, organization, and confidence as learners Collaborate with Sixth Grade Academy colleagues to create coherent, interdisciplinary learning experiences Communicate clearly and regularly with families about student progress, growth, and learning goals Participate in professional learning, faculty collaboration, and school-wide initiatives that strengthen teaching and learning Engage fully in the life of the school by supporting community events, student activities, and the broader mission of Maclay Participate in summer professional development and collaborative planning to prepare curriculum and support the successful launch of the school year. Perform additional responsibilities that support the school's mission and daily operations as needed Qualifications Bachelor's degree in science, geography, education, or a related field required; master's degree preferred Experience teaching elementary or middle school science, social studies, or integrated studies Strong interest in inquiry-based, project-based, and experiential learning Ability to design engaging learning experiences that help students explore complex ideas and systems Strong communication and relationship-building skills with students, families, and colleagues Commitment to professional growth, reflection, and continuous improvement Outstanding personal and professional references Physical Requirements and ADA Statement This role requires regular movement between classrooms and buildings, active engagement with students, and the ability to sit, stand, walk, communicate clearly, operate classroom technology, and occasionally lift materials up to 20-30 pounds.
