Applicants must demonstrate an ability to implement lessons framed around the features of writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading, (WICOR) note-taking, and study skills. Applicants must have the ability to facilitate whole group, small group, and independent instruction. The AVID Instructor must exhibit leadership skills and the capacity to collaborate with stakeholders to support the development of all learners.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
On a regular and consistent basis, meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated. Establish and maintain high expectations for AVID students' achievement. Create a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process. Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior. Utilize the AVID Curriculum (Weeks at a Glance) to establish objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and the like, consistent with the appraisal of student needs, requirements of the VBCPS curriculum framework, and knowledge of human growth and development. Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, VBCPS policy, and administrative regulation. Take all necessary and safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Collect and analyze AVID student data and regularly monitor AVID student academic progress to advocate for AVID students' access to and success in rigorous courses. Establish relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community which reflect recognition of and respect for every individual. Collaborate with prospective stakeholders (Feeder schools, AVID students, teachers, parents, building coordinator, AVID administration, and AVID District Director) to develop an AVID recruitment and retention plan based on the college and career readiness framework. Make provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms. Model and promote the use of WICOR instructional strategies across content areas. Collaborate and coach AVID tutors to effectively implement the ten steps of the AVID tutorial process. Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and, for the classroom, develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner. Evaluate one's own effectiveness and demonstrate successful application of skills and information acquired to increase effectiveness. Strive to maintain and improve professional competence. Participate in school management and share responsibility for the total school program. Collaborate with AVID site coordinator, principal, and district director on the implementation of AVID Systems to support professional learning and opportunity knowledge. As active AVID Site Team Member attend all required AVID training and meetings. Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required. Perform other duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of VBCPS curriculum and techniques for integrating AVID Curriculum (Weeks at a Glance), VBCPS policies and effective instructional practices; thorough understanding of the teaching and learning process; demonstrate a thorough knowledge of AVID standards and instructional methods for integrating Writing Inquiry, Organization and Reading WICOR best practices; ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education; ability to infuse technology into the curriculum; ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school-based staff, students, parents and community. Must have excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Required:
Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of education from an accredited college or university. Must have or be eligible for a teacher license from the Virginia Department of Education. The position requires a culturally responsive practitioner who is committed to eliminating opportunity disparities. A minimum of three years of successful teaching experience with evidence of classroom WICOR instructional practices that effectively and efficiently support learning, and a minimum of three years as an active AVID Site team member.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Frequent sitting, walking, standing, bending, grasping, fingering, repetitive motion, and reaching. Occasional stooping and kneeling. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds rarely. Requires timely and regular adherence to established work schedules. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid driver's license. Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position.

$57,801-$90,347 Salary will be based on job-related creditable years of full-time, verified work experience. Entry-level salary will be awarded at the time of hire. Upon the return of employment verification forms from the candidate's current and previous employers, the salary will be adjusted if creditable full-time experience is confirmed. VBCPS offers a full range of benefits including health insurance, paid life insurance, paid sick/personal reasons leave, tuition reimbursement, professional development and membership in the Virginia Retirement System.
