The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a Korean language instructor for fall 2026. We are seeking a skilled language instructor with a commitment to a proficiency-based approach to language teaching. The pay is $8,500 per course section. The instructor we're seeking will teach three sections of Elementary Korean in fall, with a possible opportunity for additional sections in spring. This is a temporary position that carries no benefits. Classes meet 4 days a week (Monday through Thursday) at the following times: MW 11:15-12:05 & TR 11:05-11:55, MTWR 2:30-3:20, MTWR 3:35-4:25. We will also consider applicants located in the United States who would teach remotely. Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies ( DAMES) is an academic unit in the College of Arts & Sciences. Our mission is to serve the undergraduate populations by offering majors and minors in a range of Asian and Middle Eastern languages and cultures. We also offer an MA program with two tracks: Interdisciplinary Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, and Chinese Studies. In addition, our faculty conduct research in the field of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and contribute to the College, the University, and the state through service and leadership. Position Summary This instructor will teach elementary and/or intermediate Korean. Other responsibilities include holding office hours and participating in program meetings and cultural enrichment activities. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements MA, preferably in Korean language pedagogy or a related field. Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Native or near-native proficiency in Korean and English. Experience teaching Korean as a second language at the university level, particularly in the US, is preferred.
