LIBRARIAN I YOUTH SERVICES

JOB SUMMARY
Under direction of the Youth Services Supervisor, perform a variety of complex paraprofessional duties in the Youth Services area of the Library, including but not limited to organizing, promoting, and assisting at story times and programs to encourage reading and library use. Provide in-person, telephone reference, and readers advisory services. Perform other related work as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Assist the public of all ages in selecting and locating library materials in the Youth Services area. Organize, promote, and assist with story times, programs and/or activities under supervision to encourage reading and library use. Coordinate and assemble displays and exhibits. Compile bibliographies to market collections as needed. Keep abreast of literature and assigned subjects; read professional literature; review titles for material selection; read and scan titles from the collection. Maintain the work area in acceptable fashion and keep records. Assist with routine departmental paperwork, programs, displays, book lists, reader guidance, and basic reference services. Operate computer for database/Internet searches, inputting data, and for e-mail. Sit and stand for extended periods of time while assisting patrons with public access catalog training, inputting data, and retrieving materials. Retrieve books and materials from shelves up to 8 feet high, with the aid of step stools, using appropriate safety precautions. Lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Some exposure to dust, odors, and mechanical and electrical hazards, using appropriate safety precautions. Weekend and evening work required.

Operate photocopier.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES
Bachelor's degree required.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
: Prior experience and knowledge of children's literature required. Experience in children's library preferred and working knowledge required of the community. Must be able to communicate courteously with patrons of all ages, library staff, officials, and other city employees. Skills required in operating complex computer automated library system. Basic computer literacy and Internet searching skills required.
Number of available positions:
1 Bachelor's degree required. Prior experience and knowledge of children's literature is required. Experience in children's library preferred and working knowledge required of the community.
