QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree plus the additional coursework necessary to obtain licensure as a Library Media Specialist. A Virginia endorsement as a Library Media Specialist PreK-12 is required. The ideal candidate will demonstrate knowledge of professional library science principles and library management techniques, as well as knowledge of curriculum across the four core subject areas and proficiency with a variety of reference sources and materials. Strong organizational and planning skills are essential, along with the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Candidates must also demonstrate skills in the use of technology to engage students instructionally, and the collaborative and coaching skills needed to work effectively with adult colleagues.
DESCRIPTION
The Elementary Library Media Specialist collaborates with teachers and instructional/innovation coaches to foster and directly lead deeper learning opportunities for students. The specialist plans and coordinates school-wide initiatives that motivate students to read and serves as an instructional consultant, information specialist, coach for deeper learning skills, and teacher. This role is multifaceted and supports the integration of research, communication, and information literacy skills across the curriculum.
GENERAL DUTIES
(May not include all duties performed) Ensure the effective integration of the American Association of School Librarians' learning standards and the research and communication strands of the English Virginia Standards of Learning into the school's instructional programs; integrate Virginia Computer Technology standards and Computer Science standards as they correlate with planned instruction. Develop and deliver high-quality lessons that connect the research and communication strands of the English SOLs to the deeper learning activities that teachers implement for their students. Collaborate with instructional/innovation coaches, teachers, and others to effectively integrate communication, collaboration, critical thinking and problem solving, creativity, and citizenship into mainstream, daily instruction. Design, implement, and support programs and instructional activities which develop an understanding of literature and encourage reading and learning as lifelong activities. Follow current learning theory to provide appropriate instruction and behavior management for students. Advocate for the intellectual freedom of students and staff pursuant to school division regulation regarding censorship and access to information. Curate materials in the media center strategically, keeping collections and resources current, culturally responsive, and representative. Establish and implement policies and procedures allowing for the circulation of materials; promote the use of the library through publicity and educational campaigns. Provide students and teachers with access to the media center by planning and scheduling space utilization and maintaining an attractive, accepting environment conducive to library use. Leverage the use of volunteers and/or clerical staff to handle the checking in and out of books in the media center. Submit budget requests, plan expenditures, and maintain records following defined school division procedures. Collaborate with school-level and central office staff to select, implement, and adapt information literacy skills in support of curriculum across all content areas. Work collaboratively with colleagues and administration to establish evidence-based, measurable goals driven by the school improvement plan; assist with evaluating the effectiveness and quality of the school library program. Participate in professional growth opportunities that support the Library Media Specialist's role as instructional consultant. Perform other related duties as required or assigned.
SUPERVISION
Library Media Specialist activities are performed under the general supervision of the School Principal and/or an Assistant Principal, in consult with the Director of Instruction. Supervision is exercised over students assigned and may be exercised over volunteers.
WORK CONDITIONS
Work is generally performed in a media center or classroom environment and other locations within and outside the school building as necessary. The position requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, and lifting/carrying of work-related items weighing up to 30 pounds. There is often a need to lift and set up equipment and to shelve books and other media on shelving ranging from four inches to 84 inches from the floor. Work requires sufficient mobility to move around the school and in and out of classrooms. Work involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions.
