Job Description

JOB This is an open recruitment to establish an eligibility list to fill the current vacant positions for the 2026 - 2027 school year. The eligibility list will be used to fill any vacancies which may occur within a period of one year, or until the eligibility list is depleted. The typical vacancy works 4-8 hours per day, 227 days per year. The recruitment process will consist of a training and experience examination and a structured interview.
BASIC FUNCTION
Under the direction of an assigned administrator, perform a variety of library duties involved in the acquisition, circulation, maintenance, processing, inventory and distribution of books and instructional materials at an assigned school site; assist students and teachers in the selection, location and use of library materials and equipment; promote literacy and the use of the library to students; develop age-appropriate library skills and reference strategies for students.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Perform a variety of library duties involved in the acquisition, circulation, maintenance, cataloging, processing, inventory and distribution of books and instructional materials or devices; participate in the development of the library collection to meet the current and future needs of the site; process new library books and instructional materials; maintain the library collection in a neat and orderly condition.

Circulate library materials; check library books, textbooks and instructional materials or devices in and out to students and staff using an assigned computerized system; shelve returned books and materials; clean books and mend and repair damaged books; purge obsolete materials as needed.

Assist students, teachers and others in the selection, location and use of library materials and equipment; collaborate with teachers to reinforce skills taught in the classroom; respond to inquiries and provide information to students and teachers; assist teachers in researching instructional materials for classroom use; assist parents in the selection of age-appropriate materials for their children.

Input and update circulation and various other data in an assigned computer system; utilize computer to extract and verify data and information; establish and maintain automated records and files; initiate queries and generate computerized reports.

Process and receive books, library books and instructional materials or devices; catalog and prepare materials for introduction into the library materials collection; prepare identification labels; affix identification and barcode labels to materials; input related information into assigned computer system.

Promote and encourage use of the library to faculty and students; schedule class use of the library as required; conduct library orientations; research and prepare materials and activities for stories, book talks and library skills instruction; read age-appropriate stories to students as assigned by the position; develop student library skills and promote reading and literacy; facilitate reading incentive programs as assigned, create innovative and engaging environment.

Monitor inventory levels of textbooks, instructional materials or devices and other library supplies; research, order and assist in the selection of books, periodicals and other instructional materials; inventory books and other instructional materials; respond to staff requests for library material purchases, maintain library with up to date books and resources.

Compile information and prepare and maintain a variety of records, reports and files related to library books, textbooks, instructional materials, circulation, students, overdue materials, fees, inventory, orders, vendors and assigned activities.

Calculate, collect and account for fees for lost, damaged or overdue books, instructional materials or devices as needed; issue receipts and prepare and distribute deposits; generate and distribute lost or overdue book notices to students and parents; receive and process refund requests.

Instruct students in proper methods of utilizing library and reference materials and systems; assist students with utilizing computers for research projects.

Monitor and maintain acceptable student behavior in the library; assure student compliance with established library rules and policies.

Communicate with District, students, parents, administrators, staff, faculty and various outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns; initiate and receive telephone calls; confer with vendors concerning product, pricing, orders and related information.

Operate a variety of office and library equipment such as a copier, fax machine, laminator, paper cutter, printers, audio-visual equipment, computer and assigned software; utilize and check audio-visual equipment in and out to faculty as required.

Issue and collect student instructional materials or devices at the beginning and end of the school year; issue and collect books, instructional materials or devices for new and withdrawing students.

Prepare and distribute a variety of correspondence; maintain and update lists of textbooks, instructional materials or devices, library materials, students and various other lists; prepare and process requisitions, purchase orders and invoices as required; track expenditures for library purchases.

Train and provide work direction and guidance to volunteers, student assistants and substitute staff as assigned.

Organize and create library signs, displays, decorations and bulletin boards as required; maintain a clean library environment.

Assist in coordinating and arranging book fairs and other special events as needed
OTHER DUTIES
Research new materials and developments in library science through the use of periodicals and journals purchased by the District.

Perform related duties as assigned.

ABILITY TO

Provide technical information and assistance to students, faculty and others concerning the research, selection, location and use of library materials and equipment.

Monitor and maintain acceptable student behavior in the library.

Promote and encourage use of the library to faculty and students.

Process and shelve library materials.

Catalog and prepare books and other materials for introduction into the library materials collection. Inventory, order and receive instructional materials and equipment.

Check textbooks and library materials in and out to students and staff.

Operate a computer and assigned software.

Maintain assigned databases.

Maintain files and records and prepare reports.

Calculate and collect fees for lost or overdue instructional materials as needed.

Type or input data at an acceptable rate of speed.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Candidates who meet the minimum requirements, as demonstrated in their application materials, will be required to successfully complete a competitive testing process to measure the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the job, which may consist of a written examination, a training and experience evaluation, a performance examination, and/or structured oral interviews. The candidates achieving the top three ranks of the appropriate eligibility list will be referred for a final selection interview. The Eligibility List resulting from this examination may be used to fill vacancies in related job classifications for which no Eligibility List exists (Ed Code 45272).
