Job Description

Assistant Director, Merrick Public Library (Brookfield) Click Here for a Full Job Description The Merrick Public Library is seeking a friendly, creative, organized, and service-oriented Assistant Director to oversee the daily operations of the library. This position combines public service, community engagement, and promotional strategy to ensure that the library is a welcoming, vibrant, and well-utilized community resource. This is a part-time, benefitted 29-hour position, and the work schedule includes evenings and Saturdays. The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Under the general supervision of the Library Director, the Assistant Director will:
  • Oversee the daily operation of the library, including circulation and staff; provide public service by assisting patrons with reference and readers' advisory, technology help, and other library needs.
  • Develop and maintain collections in collaboration with the Director and other staff, assisting with selection, ordering, weeding, and discarding of materials.
  • Lead marketing and communications including creating and maintaining promotional materials, newsletters, and social media content, and designing graphics and other visual materials to promote programs and services.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned. Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree plus 3 years of progressively more responsible professional experience in a library setting. A combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the responsibilities of this position may be considered in lieu of stated education and experience requirements.
  • Knowledge of and experience with library services platforms (such as Evergreen), Microsoft Office, Google Suite, or similar products, and graphic design software (such as Canva).
  • Experience with understanding, operating, and troubleshooting computer systems and associated software and hardware.
  • Ability to work independently and manage numerous, diverse tasks; ability to exercise good judgment, confidentiality, and discretion.
  • Ability to work creatively, effectively, and cooperatively with colleagues, patrons, and the community at large.
  • Excellent skills in interpersonal relations, including written, verbal, and online communication.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with library digital resources and emerging technologies.
Full/Part Time Contract Education BA/BS Salary Range $40,000.00 - $44,000.00 / year Salary Notes Renewable 3-year contract available following a 90-day probation period. Closing Date May 22, 2026
