Job Description
The Job Carteret County Public Libraries is seeking a Technical Services Assistant . Do you have library or bookstore experience? Do you enjoy data entry work? If so, our Technical Services Assistant position may be the role for you! The Location Beaufort Library Branch in Beaufort, NC. The Details Salary - $36,379.20 to $40,017.12 Posting expires 8/26/2026 Full-time with benefits including paid medical, dental and life insurance; retirement and 401(k) plans; and, paid sick, vacation and holiday leave. The Job Description General Statement of Duties Performs intermediate, semiskilled work providing support to the Technical Services unit of the Carteret County Public Library system. Distinguishing Features of the Class This position is responsible for performing item cataloging for library materials in accordance with NC Cardinal best practices and library standards. Work involves technical skill in data entry of item records and ability to interpret bibliographic records. This position acts as substitute for resource sharing duties, as needed. Work requires a high level of courtesy and tact in dealing with other library staff and the public via in person, by phone and email. Occasionally works at the Circulation Desk as scheduled by the Beaufort Branch Manager. Work is performed under the supervision of the Technical Services Supervisor and is reviewed through observation and consortia feedback for quality and effectiveness in fulfillment of library objectives as outlined by the Library Director. Duties and Responsibilities Essential Duties and Tasks
- Responsible for online item cataloging in accordance with NC Cardinal best practices and library standards.
- Performs heavy data entry in NC Cardinal Integrated Library System.
- Receives, unpacks, and processes periodical and new materials that have been ordered.
- Performs basic repair of library materials.
- Removes withdrawal materials from NC Cardinal as directed. ?
- Generates reports and performs item record related projects as directed.
- Assists in maintaining technical services unit supplies.
- Provides public services assistance, responds to routine questions relating to library collections, and sorts and shelves library materials through patron assistance at the Circulation Desk
- Promotes library resources and programs to library customers and the general public. Additional Job Duties Performs related job duties as required. Recruitment and Selection Guidelines Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General knowledge of public library systems, principles, methods and policies, and programs and materials available. ?
- General knowledge of library software application, online databases, and Integrated Library System software
- Skilled in the use of common computer technologies, including email, the Internet, word processors, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, current operating systems, mobile applications, and data entry.
- Ability to organize and record information. ?
- Ability to listen, understand, and interpret information received from supervisors, co-workers, and patrons. ?
- Ability to communicate effectively, patiently and courteously, both verbally and in writing. ?
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, library staff and the public. ?
- Ability to remain flexible and positive in an environment of continuous change. ?
- Ability to follow new or established procedures and to perform work requiring accuracy and detail. ?
- Ability to multitask and complete projects simultaneously.
- Ability to work the assigned schedule, to include evening and weekends. Physical Requirements
- Work requires the frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force.
