Job Description

This position provides public desk support to the college community, technical instruction services to students and faculty, and maintains a function area that includes responsibility for projects. A Library Specialist is expected to demonstrate and maintain competence in each of the following areas. I. Mastery of Subject Matter a. Demonstrates a thorough and accurate knowledge of an area of specialization within the field of library and information science. Areas of specialization may include interlibrary loan, library equipment, or archival practices. b. Stays current in the subject matter through professional development, through involvement in professional and paraprofessional organizations, interlibrary organizations, and attending professional and paraprofessional meetings, conferences or workshops. c. Demonstrates strong technology skills in MS Office systems, library operating systems such as circulation and reserves, and web-based technologies. II. Functional Area of Specialty a. Interprets and implements library policy and procedure. b. Manages daily processes within functional area. c. Gathers data and maintains current statistics for functional area. d. Markets and promotes library resources and services within area of specialty. e. Plans, organizes, and manages assigned projects. f. Assists librarians in management and administrative processes within area of specialty. g. Troubleshoots software and hardware issues III. Public Service Responsibilities a. Demonstrates knowledge of print and electronic information resources. b. Provides high-quality reference services to students, faculty, and staff; assists patrons by handling basic inquiries, requests, and projects requiring independent judgment and basic knowledge in interpreting policies and procedures. c. Provides accurate and timely interlibrary loan services to students, faculty and staff. d. Provides assistance in the library's makerspace. e. Provides research assistance in the archives f. Trains students, faculty, and staff in the use of library equipment and resources. g. Establishes working knowledge of all public service points, including library makerspace. IV. Support of College Policies and Procedures a. Provides library services as assigned in a multi-campus environment. b. Interprets and enforces library and college policies. c. Maintains confidentiality of student information. d. Exercises stewardship of college facilities and materials. V. Participation in College and Division Activities a. Serves on college committees as assigned. b. Participates in meetings and events required by the college and library administrators. c. Responds in a timely fashion to information requests from college and library administrators. d. Supports both part-time and full-time colleagues. e. Demonstrates leadership skills. f. Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills in communication with students, colleagues, staff and administrators as an individual or on a team. VI. Contribution to the Growth and Enhancement of College Mission and Programs a. Contributes to planning and development processes through appropriate mechanisms and channels. b. Perform responsibilities in accordance with pertinent goals, missions, and plans of the college and library services. c. Performs other duties as assignedAssociate Degree from an accredited institution and 1 year of work experience in a library.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of basic library policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of computer, library-related software, and standard office equipment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, etc.)
  • Customer service skills
  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds
Working Conditions:
Indoor environment conditions; frequently lifting and carrying objects up to 20 lbs.; frequently pulling, pushing, reaching overhead, kneeling, stooping, bending at the waist, and climbing several steps; sitting or standing at a service counter or sitting at a desk or workstation using a computer display, keyboard, and mouse with repetitive motions; using the telephone; occasionally traveling to other buildings on campus or to other campuses; exposure to elevated levels of dust from books and other printed materials; evening and weekend work hours
