Job Description

LIBRARY CLERK - PART TIME - LIBRARY LIBRARY CLERK
Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the class. Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.
DEFINITION
To perform a variety of clerical and customer service duties in support of library operations; to assist patrons with locating materials and using library resources; and to provide operational support for circulation, shelving, inventory and programming activities within the library system. This clerical position serves an integral role within library operations and may support the children's department, circulation activities, inventory management, shelving operations and library programming activities. Employees in this classification work flexible schedules including days, evenings and weekends and are expected to adhere to all City and Library policies, procedures and operational guidelines while serving as a role model in their application.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification performs clerical, circulation and customer service duties within the Library Department. Employees at this level are responsible for assisting patrons, shelving and organizing materials, supporting library operations and maintaining library records while exercising sound judgment and professionalism in public service activities.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives supervision from assigned library supervisory or management staff. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS
Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Provide courteous customer service and assist library patrons in locating materials and accessing library resources. Answer telephones and direct calls to appropriate staff in a timely and professional manner. Utilize computers and library systems to perform circulation activities, catalog searches and related library services. Shelf-read, inventory, sort and re-shelve library materials. Explain library policies and procedures to patrons. Shelve books, audio/visual items and other library materials accurately and efficiently. Shift and straighten library materials and shelving areas as needed. Assist with library programming, story time activities and operational support assignments as needed. Assist patrons with operation of photocopiers, computers and other library equipment. Prepare signs, reports, notices and related library materials. Clean books, cover books and perform minor book repairs. Assist with inventory, weeding, statistics and records maintenance activities. Maintain acceptable attendance and the ability to work effectively with others. Any specific requirements stated in the "offer of employment letter." Safety for oneself and others is a primary responsibility of every employee. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Principles, Practices and Knowledge of:
Alphabetical and Dewey Decimal filing systems. Standard safety practices. Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment. Basic library circulation and customer service procedures. Computer systems and applications used in library operations.
Operational Skills and Core Competencies:
Provide high levels of customer service to library patrons and City employees. Work independently and follow written and oral instructions. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patrons, employees and the public. Read, understand and sort titles, call numbers and dates accurately using alphabetical, numerical, chronological and Dewey Decimal order systems. Operate computers, printers, telephones and library systems effectively. Adhere to library policies and procedures. Maintain attention to detail and organizational accuracy. Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
Any combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the required qualifications for this position may be considered qualifying.
Experience:
Customer service, clerical, library or related experience preferred.
Education and Training:
High school diploma, GED or equivalent preferred.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Environmental Conditions:
Library and office environment with frequent interaction with patrons and operation of computers, library equipment and book carts. Evening and weekend work may be required.
Functional Requirements:
Maintain functional capabilities necessary to perform assigned duties including: Standing, sitting or walking for prolonged periods of time. Lifting or carrying materials weighing up to 40 pounds. Squatting, stretching and reaching to shelve materials. Manipulating and gripping library materials and equipment. Pushing and pulling loaded library book carts. Reading, writing and interpreting library and operational information. Observing and responding to operational and customer service conditions. Exercising sound judgment and decision-making abilities.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver's license required.
