Job Description
The purpose of this position is to provide quality customer service for all library customers, serving as the front-line staff at the Circulation Desk. This individual provides a variety of tasks involving public service. Primary assignment will be in Circulation, but will be cross-trained and may assist in other areas as needed. Provides circulation, readers' advisory, and outreach services to library patrons. Assists patrons with selecting materials and using library equipment, databases, digital resources, internet access, and software applications. Coordinates and maintains library displays and promotional materials. Responds to routine patron inquiries in person, by telephone, and through other communication channels. Checks library materials in and out and processes renewals. Registers new borrowers and maintains accurate patron registration records. Pulls, processes, and manages requested library materials. Administers and monitors study room reservations. Empties book drops and processes returned materials. Shelves, straightens, and maintains library collections in proper order. Conducts shelf reading and searches for lost or missing materials. Processes incoming library materials and prepares them for circulation. Assists with volunteer recruitment, coordination, training, and support. Assesses and collects fines for overdue materials and fees for lost items. Processes, records, and reconciles payments for library-related transactions. Maintains a welcoming, organized, and customer-focused library environment.
Collection Development:
Weeds collection on an on-going basis and submits patron recommendations for new materials.
Professional Development:
Attends staff meetings; meets monthly with supervisor for one-on-one meetings; attends other meetings as necessary. This position requires occasional travel to other locations for work, meetings and training. Performs other duties as required. High school diploma or equivalent required with some college courses preferred. No experience required. Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, twist, talk, hear, and use hands to reach for, finger, grasp, handle, feel and/or operate objects, tools, or controls. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and office equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally to frequently, required to climb, balance, stoop, crouch, squat, kneel, and crawl. The employee must occasionally to frequently lift and/or carry up to twenty pounds, frequently to constantly lift and/or carry up to ten pounds. Employee must frequently to constantly push and/or pull loaded book carts and/or boxes of materials.
